READING, Pa. - #13 Lebanon Valley improved to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play with a pair of wins over Albright on Thursday.
A day after their original date was rained out, the Dutchmen slugged it out for an 8-0 five-inning victory in game one, then pulled away late for a 9-2 game two win.
In the opener,
Sam Derr twirled her second straight two-hitter while driving in a pair of runs as catcher
Emily Johnson singled in a run and later homered for a four-RBI outing. Freshman
Jordyn Miller's grand slam - her first career home run - capped a five-RBI game for her in the nightcap as pitcher
Haley Neff helped herself with an early two-run single.
Katie Deardorff moved into second place on the LVC all-time hits list with a 2-for-3 game two, taking her to 147 for her career. She trails only Amy Batz '08, who smacked 170 hits between 2005 and 2008.
Game One
Sam Derr (7-0) shut down the Lions from the circle as LVC capitalized on opportunites to run-rule the hosts 8-0. LVC's bats woke up the second time through the order, loading the bases in the third for Derr, who drove in a pair of runs with a single to center.
Sammy Bost scored on a wild pitch the next at-bat, and Derr wheeled around to make it 4-0 when
Allie Hartman reached on an error. That extended the inning to let Johnson drive in a fifth run with a single up the middle.
In the fifth, Johnson homered for the second straight outing and third time this season, driving one to center to bring in Derr and
Elaine Gross and set up the 8-0 early finish.
Derr struck out three and allowed just one Lion to reach scoring position, facing three over the minimum. Katie Civitello took the loss, allowing seven earned on nine hits. Bost, Derr, and Johnson each had multi-hit games.
Game Two
LVC took an early lead in the nightcap, riding
Haley Neff's two-run single following Bost's base hit and Derr's walk to go up 2-0 in the first inning. Albright threatened in the bottom half with a runner on third, but
Kelli Valle recovered from a passed ball to get Jalene Garcia out at home to end the chance.
An Albright error in the second led to two more runs as an overthrow by the third baseman going home allowed Miller and
Katie Deardorff to come across and build a 4-0 lead. Natalie Carlucci's homer in the sixth - the first allowed by LVC this season - cut it to 4-2, but Miller singled through the left side in the sixth to bring in Deardorff, then blasted a grand slam to left in the top of the seventh to flip a tight 4-2 game into a comfortable 9-2 win.
Neff battled all game, getting out of bases-loaded jams in the third and fourth innings thanks to some nice defensive play, including an unassisted line-out double play by Hartman to end the third. Neff (7-0) departed in the sixth as Derr came in with a 5-2 lead to earn her first save of the year with two innings of no-hit ball.
Civitello (3-12) also threw the second game, allowing seven earned and walking five.
