#15 Lebanon Valley 5, Alvernia 3
ANNVILLE, Pa. - All four of #15 Lebanon Valley's seniors made big contributions as the Dutchmen split a doubleheader with Alvernia on Saturday.
Alvernia slugged to a 6-2 win in the opener, but Lebanon Valley bounced back to win 5-3 in the nightcap. The Dutchmen (29-4, 14-2 CC) will have to wait until Sunday to learn their Commonwealth Conference Tournament seeding. If Widener can take at least one game from Messiah in their rained-out doubleheader, LVC will be the #1 seed; if Messiah wins both games, it will be the top seed and the Dutchmen second. The tournament will take place May 2-4 at Alvernia.
Seniors
Sam Derr and
Allie Hartman each hit home runs,
Mary Readinger had a key two-run double, and
Katie Deardorff had two hits with an RBI and a run scored as they played for what is likely the final time at the LVC Softball Park.
Derr pitched both games and was dealt the first loss of her season in game one, but threw a strong second game to improve to 19-1 this year. LVC was stymied by Brittany Wolfe (10-9) in the opener, but hit her in the second game as they took advantage of a pair of Crusader errors.
Deardorff's two hits took her 166 for her career as she chases the LVC all-time record of 170. Hartman, who set the program starts record earlier this week, became LVC's games played leader with her 148th appearance while extending her home run record to 15.
Game OneAlvernia slugged 13 hits, including home runs by Ally Shilling and Brianna Kuhn, in a 6-2 game one win.
LVC took a 1-0 first-inning lead with Derr's solo shot to right center, but Sam Penk drove in a run in the second before Shilling's lead-off homer in the third put Alvernia ahead 2-1.
The Dutchmen tied it on Deardorff's single to plate
Jordyn Miller in the fourth, but Kuhn smashed a two-run bomb to the scoreboard in left to go ahead 4-2, and added a two-run single in the seventh ensure the 6-2 win.
Wolfe shut down LVC's bats, not allowing a runner past second over the final three innings to hold the lead. Derr struck out five but allowed six earned in 13 hits in her first loss of the season. Her 18-game win streak will go into the record books as NCAA Division III's 17th-longest ever.
Game TwoA three-run fourth inning by Lebanon Valley rallied them from 2-1 down and helped secure a 5-3 win in the nightcap.
Hartman's first-inning double drove in Derr for an early 1-0 lead, but Alvernia runs in the third and fourth on doubles from Rachel Fritz and Brianna DePriest put the Crusaders ahead 2-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Hartman led off with a solo home run to the deepest part of the park to tie it 2-2, but LVC took advantage of an error to load the bases with no outs. After Alvernia turned a 5-2-3 double play to leave runners on second and third, Readinger roped a double into the gap to score two more runs and establish a 5-2 lead.
DePriest homered to left to lead off the seventh, but Alvernia left the tying run at the plate as Derr worked out of trouble to improve to 19-1.
Derr struck out three and allowed eight hits; Brianna Fisher started for Alvernia and allowed a run in two innings, while Wolfe took the loss in relief with one earned run in four innings.
