CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - #14 Lebanon Valley shut down DeSales to take a non-conference doubleheader on the road, 2-0 and 7-2, on Monday.
Sam Derr improved to 16-0 with a four-hit shutout in the opener, then hit a home run and drove in three runs in support of
Haley Neff's victory in game two. Lebanon Valley (26-3) drilled 19 hits combined.
Allie Hartman became LVC's all-time leader in games started, getting her 143rd career nod (and 130th consecutive start) in game two to surpass Amy Batz '07. With an RBI single in the second game, Hartman also became the third player in program history to reach 150 career hits, joining Batz (170) and teammate
Katie Deardorff, who had four hits on the afternoon to reach 160. Deardorff also scored her 99th career run as she tries to be the first Dutchman to achieve the century mark in that category.
Game OneLVC scored a pair of unearned runs in the third inning, taking advantage of a DeSales mistake to win a pitcher's duel between Derr and Rachel Vogel.
Mary Readinger struck out to start the third but reached on a passed ball, and she advanced to second on
Sammy Bost's single later in the inning. Readinger was caught out at third on Derr's fielder's choice, and the inning was extended further when Hartman reached on an error at first to allow Bost to score. Hartman stole second and
Jordyn Miller walked, setting up a bases-loaded situation for
Emily Johnson, who singled in Derr to make it 2-0.
DeSales put their only baserunner in scoring position in the third as Derr dominated the Bulldogs, retiring 11 in a row at one point as she threw an efficient 72 pitches. At 16-0, Derr is NCAA Division III's last unbeaten pitcher with at least 10 wins this season; the shutout was the 20th of her career and eighth in a row. She has not allowed an earned run in her last 30 innings pitched.
Rachel Vogel (4-6) struck out three and did not allow an earned run in the loss for DeSales.
Game TwoLed by Derr's three RBI and 3-for-4 efforts by
Sammy Bost and
Katie Deardorff, LVC jumped out to an early lead and piled on with a five-run fourth inning to win the nightcap 7-2.
Derr hit her second round-tripper of the year in the first to make it 2-0, but DeSales cut into the advantage with a run in the second. A one-out rally in the fourth, however, put the game firmly in LVC's control.
Katie Deardorff singled and stole to spark the inning, and
Kelli Valle doubled her in before
Jorey Aumiller's single put runners on the corners to chase starter and 2013 Freedom Conference Pitcher of the Year DJ McCauley.
An error led
Mary Readinger reach and scored Valle with Aumiller caught out at the plate, but consecutive singles by
Tessa Deardorff, Bost, Derr, and Hartman brought in three more runs to blow the game open at 7-1.
Michelle Gessner's two-out double in the seventh made it 7-2, but Neff (7-3) managed the game well in the win, striking out two and not allowing a walk. McCauley (6-7) took the loss with Brittany Wilson throwing 3.2 innings of relief.
