ANNVILLE, Pa. - #13 Lebanon Valley continued its roll, improving to 13-0 with a pair of Commonwealth Conference wins over Lycoming on Tuesday.
The Dutchmen won 3-0 in the opener behind a sparkling 2-hit effort by
Sam Derr, then slugged their way to an 8-4 nightcap victory that included home runs by
Emily Johnson and
Sammy Bost.
Lebanon Valley remains one of two unbeaten teams left in NCAA softball, along with the University of Chicago (10-0), and they showed no rust despite having not played since March 22 due to cold and rainy weather last week.
Derr helped herself in the opener with a two-run double, while Bost and Johnson each drove in three runs in game two, including Bost's inside-the-park home run and Johnson's three-run blast to center.
Lebanon Valley wore pink uniforms for their annual breast cancer awareness game, joining other LVC teams in supporting the American Cancer Society.
Game One
Lebanon Valley did all the damage it needed in the third to beat Lycoming 3-0 in game one. With
Tessa Deardorff on second and Bost on first, Derr ripped a double to left center, plating both runs to put LVC ahead 2-0/
Bost added an insurance run in the fifth, dropping a fly ball past the centerfielder playing in and wheeling around for a triple. She scored on a wild pitch on the next at-bat.
The insurance wasn't needed, as it turned out. After giving up a lead-off single in the first, Derr (6-0) retired the next 17 batters she faced in an efficient 80-pitch outing, striking out five and issuing no walks as she faced two over the minimum. Kristi Weaver (3-3) allowed eight hits and three runs with a pair of strikeouts for Lyco.
Game Two
Lycoming jumped out to an early lead before a big six-run third by LVC shut the door on the Warriors' upset hopes. Weaver sliced a single up the middle in the second to score their first run of the day, but
Haley Neff limited the damage to leave the bases loaded.
Stifled the first time through the lineup by Lycoming starter Caroline Lapano, Lebanon Valley's bats awoke the second time around in the third. Singles by
Mary Readinger and
Tessa Deardorff put both in scoring position, setting up an RBI single by Bost to plate Readinger. Derr followed with a two-run screamer over the Lapano's glove, and after an
Allie Hartman hit put two on, Johnson smashed her second home run of the season to the flag poles in center field to put LVC up 6-1.
The fourth yielded two more runs thanks to an incredible play by Bost. With
Liz Bauer on first, Bost put a fly ball in play that trailed away from centerfielder Dominique Thomas and headed to the fence. By the time Thomas fielded the ball, Bost was halfway to third and being waved around, and she slid to beat the relay at home for what is believed to be the first inside-the-park home run in program history.
Lycoming tried to mount a comeback in the sixth, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded pinch-hit double by Shawna Risley before Elisa Novak singled in another run, but Neff ended the threat again and finished out the seventh for the win.
Neff (6-0) struck out six in the victory, while Lapano (2-3) had three K's allowing 10 hits.
Next Time
LVC turns around and visits Albright tomorrow afternoon.
