ANNVILLE, Pa. - #14 Lebanon Valley won another dramatic walk-off in game one, then blasted Widener for 13 runs in the five-inning nightcap to improve to 11-0 this season.
Widener forced extra innings but LVC took the opener 5-4 thanks to
Sam Derr's walk-off single to score
Sammy Bost. Game two featured a nine-run fourth for the Valley as
Haley Neff improved to 5-0, helping herself with a 2-for-2 day including a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored.
Already the program recordholder for runs batted in, senior
Allie Hartman became the first Dutchman to record 100 RBIs with two on the day, and
Tessa Deardorff ran her consecutive stolen bases streak to 50.
Emily Johnson jacked a three-run homer in game one, while
Sammy Bost went 5-for-8 with five stolen bases and three runs scored across the doubleheader.
Lebanon Valley, ranked 14th in the latest NFCA national coaches' poll, is now 11-0 for the first time in program history.
Game OneWidener opened an early 2-0 lead when pitcher Alexis Schengrund put a two-run single into left in the second, but Johnson responded in the next inning with a three-run blast to right field to put LVC ahead 3-2.
Sam Ginder doubled in Derr in the fifth to make it 4-2, but in a seventh inning that was a virtual carbon copy of Thursday's opener against Elizabethtown, Widener rallied back to tie the game with a pair of manufactured runs. Heather Forward grounded out to score Schengrund, then Angela Hood drove a full count pitch to left to plate Ally Horvath and force extra innings after LVC led the winning run on second in the bottom half.
In the eighth, Carissa Harris led off with a single but was caught up in a sacrifice attempt, and after a fly-out, Johnson gunned down Bree Vanreenen stealing at second to end the top half. Bost threaded a dribbler up the middle to reach with one out on LVC's turn, then stole second to set up the winning run as Derr put a single into left field to win it.
Derr (5-0) struck out three and allowed four earned runs. Alexis Schengrund (4-1) lost for the first time this season after baffling LVC early on, allowing two earned runs.
Game TwoThe nightcap started much like the opener with Widener going ahead 2-0 on Vanreenen's two-run single in the first inning. And like game one, LVC wasted no time retaking the lead as RBIs by Bost, Hartman, and
Kelli Valle made it 3-2 in the bottom of the first and Bost singled in Neff an inning later to go up 4-2.
The taps turned on full blast in the fourth, however, as LVC recorded nine runs off as many hits, including all four of Neff's RBIs. She started the inning with a double to the wall to score
Katie Deardorff, and
Mary Readinger and
Tessa Deardorff drove in two more runs before Bost singled to make it 8-2. After Widener brought in Jackie Korang to pitch, Derr tripled in Bost and Hartman notched her 100th RBI on a single to lead 10-2. Neff capped the rally with a three-run homer to deep left center, bringing in
Jasmine Dutton and
Kim Ortiz-Marrero.
Neff had a strong outing, allowing just two hits and none after the first inning as she struck out five. Widener starter Salina Allebach (0-1) was chased in the first inning, giving way to Devin Coyne (2.1 IP, 5 ER) who was later relived by Korang (1.0 IP, 4.0 ER).
Next TimeLVC will visit Wilkes on Tuesday for a non-league twinbill.
