DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Clutch foul shooting rescued Lebanon Valley in the final minute as it held off Ursinus for a 65-58 win on the final day of the Land of Magic Classic at Embry-Riddle University's ICI Center.
LVC ends 2014 - and its non-conference schedule - at 8-4 overall, its best mark at the New Year since 2010-11 when it also started 8-4 on the way to a 23-7 record and the ECAC South title. Ursinus (3-8) saw its three-game win streak snapped as it was held to 39.3 percent shooting by the Dutchmen defense.
The Dutchmen starting five turned in a balanced scoring effort led by
Kevin Agnew's 21 points and seven assists and
Andy Orr's 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Kyler Burke was a key contributor with 14 points and five boards while
Travis Conrad and
Zach Mrozek added eight points each.Â
Foul shooting proved to be big for the Dutchmen, who went 8-for-8 at the line in the final minute to win what was a one-point game after Joe Lostracco's tip-in with 33 seconds to go made it 57-56. LVC was 14-of-15 at the line in the game and 29-of-31 for the tournament.Â
The DutchmenLebanon Valley shot 43.4 percent overall and 5-for-21 from beyond the arc; the Bears were 6-of-23 from range and just 8-for-13 at the line. Malik Draper led UC with 17 points.
The Dutchmen led virtually the entire way, building an eight-point lead at halftime that at times stretched into double digits in the second half. They couldn't shake the Bears, however, and a late 5-0 Ursinus run cut the lead to 53-50 with 3:29 left. Orr and Draper traded buckets out of a UC timeout, and after Mrozek's short-range jumper put LVC ahead 57-52 with 1:31 to go, back-to-back scores by Lostracco put Ursinus down a point with 33 ticks left.
The Bears were forced to foul at that point, and LVC delivered at the line. Agnew and Mrozek each made a pair around a missed shot by Matt Knowles, and Ursinus missed another three-pointer before Agnew iced it with 12 seconds left.
LVC returns to Commonwealth Conference play Saturday, hosting Arcadia at 3 p.m.
