ANNVILLE, Pa. -
Travis Conrad's putback with 1:16 left made the difference as Lebanon Valley held off a tough McDaniel team for a 52-50 win at Sorrentino Gymnasium.
The Dutchmen improved to 6-3 but had to earn it after the Green Terror (5-3) outscored LVC 14-5 in the final 10 minutes to erase a double-digit deficit and tie the game in the final two minutes.
Kevin Agnew scored 20 points, Conrad ended with 13, and
Andy Orr notched his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Tim Stewart led all players with 23 for McDaniel, including three straight buckets late in the half as part of a 10-0 run to tie it.
It was a tale of two halves for the Dutchmen, who were lights-out in the first (56 percent overall, 5-of-7 from the outside) but cold in the second (20.8 percent, 1-of-6 from range).
A quick opening by both teams gave way to a huge 17-3 Dutchmen run mid-half that gave the hosts firm control of the game. Trailing 11-7, buckets by Mrozek and Agnew tied it before an Orr jam gave LVC the lead; after Andrew Merlo made a three-pointer with 12:30 left in the first, Lebanon Valley reeled off the next 11 points, eight of them by Agnew, as
Luke Berguson picked three steals and drew a charge in the same span.
Up 37-26 to start the second half - their largest lead of the game - the Dutchmen couldn't find the killer blow to put the game away as McDaniel drew within six on another Merlo long-ball with 13:09 to go;
Kyler Burke's backdoor layup from Mrozek at 12:04 would be LVC's last field goal for more than eight minutes as the Green Terror hit a 10-2 run to draw within a basket.
Stewart sank the last six points of that spurt before an Agnew three-pointer stopped the bleeding at 5:06 to make it 50-46 LVC. Merlo and Nick Perugino canned consecutive buckets, however, to tie it at 50 with 1:47 left, but Conrad put the Dutchmen back on top with a putback of his own missed layup with 1:16 to go.
That would turn out to be the final points of the game. Stewart missed a shot at the other end and Conrad was off on a three-point attempt; with the final shot to tie or win, Perugino clanked an open look from the corner trying to win it and Brooks' desperation heave off Phillip Perry's offensive board was wide at the buzzer.
LVC will return to Sorrentino Gym Friday night to host Marywood.
