ANNVILLE, Pa. - Freshman
Andy Orr posted his first career double-double to lead Lebanon Valley past Penn State Harrisburg, 73-61, in their 2014-15 home opener.
The Dutchmen improved to 2-1 with a balanced effort all around, shaking off a pesky Lions (0-3) in the second half as they controlled the game from start to finish.
Orr impressed with 20 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists and two blocks, while
Kevin Agnew scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half while dishing a game-high five dimes.
"I think we controlled the tempo of the game the entire time, and that's good," said head coach
Brad McAlester. "We still need to keep working on timing and the right shot at the right time, but overall I think we made stops when we had to and we made all of our foul shots at the end."
Both teams had spurts of momentum in the first half, but the Dutchmen seized control of the game just before the half to turn a 27-26 Harrisburg edge into a 33-26 lead in the locker room, as Orr made back-to-back buckets in the final two minutes before dishing off to
Zach Mrozek with two seconds left.
Penn State Harrisburg never led again, but kept the Dutchmen on a tether every time they threatened to blow the game open in the second half. A Caleb Barwin three-pointer came after consecutive Orr buckets stretched the lead to 11 for the first time, and an Arick Sodini jumper later in the half again cut the lead to single digits after
Nate Dawson made a pair of free throws.
"I'm happy that we had energy the whole time," McAlester said. "We didn't think we would lose, we didn't have that feeling. We felt like taking control of it, and they responded."
Free throws turned out to be an asset for LVC, making 12 in a row at one point late in the second half and shooting 19-of-24 overall a blistering 18-of-20 in the second half. Lebanon Valley shot 43.9 percent overall despite having an off night from long range at 4-for-17. The Dutchmen also controlled the glass, leading 38-28 on rebounding with 10 offensive caroms.
Mrozek ended with seven points and three assists;
Kyler Burke turned in eight points and five boards. Dawson led all bench players with six points. Sodini paced the Lions with a team-high 12 points.
LVC will visit Moravian on Saturday.
