GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Four Lebanon Valley players reached the double-digit scoring mark and the Flying Dutchmen started their 2014-15 campaign with a 59-44 victory over Haverford at Gwynedd Mercy's tip-off tournament on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 15.
Junior
Taylor Umbrell led the way with a game-high 15 points while fellow junior
Bridget Rothert recorded her first career double-double when she pulled in 11 rebounds to go with her ten tallies. The victory also marked the first for
Amy Sokaitis as Lebanon Valley head coach.
LVC jumped out to a 7-2 advantage when Umbrell knocked down her first three-pointer of the game at the 16:16 mark. The Fords used an ensuing 8-0 run to take their first lead of the afternoon at 10-7. Things remained tight until the Dutchmen went on an 11-0 run to end the first half. Umbrell, Rothert, junior
Peyton Carper, and sophomore
Lauren Derby all got into the scoring act during the crucial timeframe.
The second half belonged to Lebanon Valley as the Blue and White led by as many as 20 points after the break. An 11-4 run by the Dutchmen to end the game left no doubt and ended any chance of a Haverford comeback.
Carper came up big when it mattered most as she netted 10 of her 14 points in the second half. Derby played well in her first career start, pouring in ten points on 5-6 shooting from the field. Umbrell grabbed eight boards to go along with her game-high point total and five assists while sophomore
Hilary Yoh pitched in with six rebounds. Rothert added five assists and junior
Alyssa Cirucci tallied six points while shooting 50 percent from the floor.
The Dutchmen outshot Haverford from distance as they racked up a 35.3 three-point shooting percentage compared to just 23.5 percent by the Fords. LVC also outworked Haverford on the glass, holding the advantage in total rebounds (41-38).
The victory propels Lebanon Valley into the Gwynedd Mercy tip-off tournament championship game tomorrow afternoon. The Dutchmen will face the winner of the matchup between Manhattanville and the hosts at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16.
