OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Lebanon Valley gave #19 Eastern a run for their money before sweeping Wilkes at a MAC Crossover event at Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 4. The Flying Dutchmen played the nationally-ranked Eagles tough before falling in straight sets 25-17, 25-17, and 25-17 in their first match of the day. They bounced back nicely by downing the Lady Colonels 25-22, 25-8, and 25-20 in the nightcap.
Sophomore
Greta Weidemoyer recorded a team-high eight kills against Eastern and
Nina Mentzer added five of her own. Juniors
Emily Sides and
Alli Quirk pitched in with four kills apiece.
The Dutchmen played well defensively and racked up 52 total digs. Senior captain
Kacey Musselman dug out 14 balls while junior libero
Allie Garrett dug out 12 Eagle attempts. Sophomore
Rachel Moltz added eight digs. LVC stopped three Eastern attempts as well with Quirk and Mentzer each notching a solo block while Mentzer assisted with Weidemoyer on the other.
Fresh off earning her 4,000th career assist three nights earlier, Musselman assisted on 19 points in the opener on Saturday afternoon.
A come-from-behind first set victory over Wilkes in the team's second outing of the day set the tone for a second set rout. The Lady Colonels played LVC tight in the final set but the Dutchmen were too much for Wilkes down the stretch, holding off a late push and scoring the match's final three points.
Quirk racked up a game-high nine kills against Wilkes while Mentzer pounded home seven attempts. Weidemoyer and sophomore
Taylor Troutman added six kills each.
The Dutchmen were strong on defense once again as the squad totaled 55 digs and six blocks against the Lady Colonels. Garrett dug out a team-high 14 balls while Sides added a double-digit dig total of 12. Musselman and Moltz dug out seven Wilkes' attempts apiece. Quirk was stout at the net and turned away three Wilkes' attempts by herself. She also added two block assists, as did Sides. Musselman and Mentzer each had an assisted block.
Musselman did her job as setter once again as she racked up a match-high 31 assists against the Lady Colonels.
Lebanon Valley head coach Wayne Perry was pleased with his team's defensive efforts, particularly against a perennially strong Eastern squad. He also noted that Mentzer and Quirk were outstanding at the crossover as each young lady was strong vertically both offensively and defensively. Their initial prowess at the net allowed for LVC to play their strong brand of defense in both outings.
The split improved the Dutchmen to 16-4 on the season and helped prepare them for their next outing on Wednesday night, Oct. 8. Lebanon Valley hosts Albright in their fourth Commonwealth Conference matchup of the year. First serve at Sorrentino Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
