FREDERICK, Md. – Lebanon Valley battled hard on the road, held a one-goal lead on two separate occasions, but ultimately fought to a 2-2 double overtime draw with Commonwealth Conference opponent Hood on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 28. The Flying Dutchmen got a goal from freshman
Austin Freeman and took advantage of a Blazer own goal but couldn't connect on tie-breaking score in the second half.
Freeman's goal came 33 minutes into the contest off an assist from sophomore
John McHale. After gathering a pass from McHale, Freeman worked through the Hood defense and got off a shot from the left side that found the right post and put the visitors up 1-0 early.
The Blazers responded seven minutes later when Colin Viti netted the equalizer from close range but a mistake by Hood opened the door for the Dutchmen to regain the advantage. With time winding down in the first half, Blazer goalkeeper Henry Mills left his post and a hometown defender tried to avoid LVC pressure by playing the ball back to his GK. Luckily for the Blue and White, there was no one home and a slow roller found twine to put the visitors back on top with just 18 seconds left before the break.
After knocking on the door early in the second half, Hood connected with their second equalizer when Christiano Pillari struck a ball with his left put and bent his attempt inside the near post from 28 yards out in the 68th minute.
Both teams scrapped for the go-ahead score that never materialized as each squad got off two shots per extra session but Lebanon Valley freshman goalkeeper
Cam Avery and Mills were up to the task of turning away all comers. Both teams got off eight shots on goal apiece and both keepers made six saves on the afternoon.
The draw was well-earned but it made the Dutchmen's playoff chances even foggier then they had been previously. At 6-9-2 overall and 2-3-2 in conference play, Lebanon Valley needs to defeat Stevenson in their season-finale and get some help in the form of a Hood loss and a Widener loss or tie to clinch a spot in the Commonwealth's postseason tournament. LVC's final regular season game comes against the Mustangs at Herbert Field on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 1. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
