ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley used scores by juniors
Brian Lowe and
Curtis Washburn, as well as ten crucial saves by freshman goalkeeper
Cam Avery to shut out Commonwealth Conference opponent Stevenson 2-0 at Herbert Field on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 1. The combination of LVC's win and Lycoming's 2-0 victory over Widener earlier in the day clinched a CC postseason tournament quarterfinal spot for the Flying Dutchmen.
In the game's 16th minute, the Blue and White broke into the Mustangs' half of the field, charged toward Stevenson's frame and took advantage of some favorable numbers when freshman
Austin Freeman got around his defender and crossed a ball from point-blank range that a sliding Lowe was able to put home into the left side of the net. After coming oh-so-close on numerous occasions, the score on the final day of the regular season was Lowe's first of the year.
Washburn's goal came in the 76th minute when sophomore
John McHale lofted a ball from the Dutchmen's half of the field over the head of everyone but the Stevenson keeper that Washburn ran down. He gathered the offering, drove towards the net until Mustang GK Ryan Callinan committed to the ball, and finished with a shot that found twine in the left half of the visitors' goal. The score was Washburn's first of the fall.
The contest was a fairly evenly matched affair that saw Lebanon Valley outshoot the Mustangs 21-16 overall and 14-10 in the shots on goal category. The Dutchmen also held the advantage in corner kicks at 8-6 while each team committed 14 fouls on the afternoon.
Coming into the game, Lebanon Valley's postseason fate was still up in the air. After getting some help from Lycoming earlier in the afternoon, the Dutchmen held up their end of the bargain in clinching a playoff spot.
With the victory, LVC finished the season with a 7-8-3 overall record and a 3-3-2 record against Commonwealth competition. The Dutchmen will play their quarterfinal matchup on the road at Alvernia on Tuesday night, Nov. 4. Full times and matchups for the 2014 Commonwealth Conference postseason tournament will be announced on Sunday afternoon.
