ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley sophomore
Sammy Bost scored three times and the Flying Dutchmen made quick work of Widener to clich a Commonwealth Conference tournament spot thanks to a 7-0 shutout.
The win, combined with Tuesday's results from around the league, clinched the postseason berth for the Dutchmen (12-2-1, 4-1 CC) with three games left to play. In addition to Bost's hat trick, LVC got two scores from junior
Rachel Cummings and a goal apiece from freshman
Teanna Shutt and sophomore
Mackenzie Murray.
Bost got the Dutchmen on the board first when she netted a goal just two minutes into the contest off a cross from fellow sophomore
Kristin Robeson.  Shutt doubled the home team's advantage in the sixth minute thanks to a perfectly placed attempt off a tough angle from the right side of the Widener box.  Bost assisted on the score.  The pair of goals were the team's 15th and 16th scored this season in the first ten minutes of a game.
Bost netted her second tally of the afternoon when she crashed the Pride goal and rebounded home a blocked attempt by senior
Amanda Douglass from the left side of the field in the 31st minute.  She completed the hat trick by converting a penalty kick following a Widener foul in the box in the 49th minute.  Shutt drew the call that ended in points.  Her final score of the day upped Bost's team-leading goal total to 14 on the year.
Murray got into the scoring act when she converted an attempt from left of goal in the 51st minute and Cummings netted two rapid fire scores in the 66th and 69th minutes with junior
Sara Shissler assisting on the first of her two goals.
While the LVC offense dominated the contest, the Dutchmen defense played just as big a role in the outcome.  As it has for much of the season, the group of defenders consisting of freshman
Emmie Santoleri, Robeson, junior
Alexa Muffly, and freshman
Taylor Kleeschulte held it down on the back end and limited Widener to just three shots on the day; all of which came late in the game while half of the foursome was resting on the sideline.
Four Lebanon Valley goalkeepers saw time in net against the Pride with freshman
Kristina Maleski seeing the most work in terms of Pride attempts.  The first-year player made stops on both of Widener's shots on goal.
The midfielders were dominant as well.  Douglass, Shutt, and sophomores
Laura Zimmermann and
Johnna Garbrick controlled the tempo and kept the ball on the Pride half of the field until the game was well in hand while also combining for a goal and an assist as a unit.
LVC's latest win combined with Messiah's 8-0 victory over Hood and Arcadia's 7-0 blanking of Alvernia on Tuesday night assured the Dutchmen of a spot in the 2014 Commonwealth Conference postseason tournament.
The decisive victory improved Lebanon Valley to 12-2-1 on the season and 4-1 in Commonwealth play.  The victory was the team's third-straight and the Dutchmen will look to keep that trend going when they travel to Arcadia for their next outing on Saturday, Oct. 25.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
