WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lebanon Valley blazed the comeback trail in a 4-3 victory over Commonwealth Conference opponent Lycoming on Thursday afternoon in what appeared early to be a game they'd run away with. After two goals by sophomore
Sammy Bost put the Flying Dutchmen ahead in the opening minutes, the home team scored three straight and led at halftime. LVC sophomore
Johnna Garbrick tied the score after the break and senior
Amanda Douglass netted the game-winner.
Keeping with the team's propensity for striking quickly this season (the Dutchmen have scored 14 goals within the first ten minutes of a game), Bost converted her first score just 25 seconds into the contest when her shot deflected off the hands of Warrior goalkeeper Joelle Winey and into the back of the net.
It didn't take long for Lebanon Valley to double their lead thanks to Bost scoring her team-leading tenth goal of the season and second on the day. She connected on a rebounded shot in the 11th minute with Douglass assisting on the score.
Just about the time it appeared the Dutchmen might turn this one into a laugher, the Warrior offense bolted to life to the tune of three scores in a span of 13 minutes. A Lycoming breakaway led to a Jordan Lazarich goal off a Kaitlyn Gulotta assist in the 20th minute, Riley Zimmerman's throw-in found the foot of Olivia Mendler who converted the equalizer in the 31st minute, and Lazarich headed home her second score of the contest off an Amanda Wisolmerski free kick to put the Warriors ahead two minutes later.
The home team managed just three shots in the first half but all of them found twine. Despite being outshot 14-3 in the first 45 minutes, Lycoming clung to a slim lead at the break.
Barely a minute into the second period, however, LVC regrouped and swung the momentum back in their favor when Douglass' corner kick found Garbrick who headed home the equalizer in the 46th minute.
After assisting on two scores, Douglass gave her team the lead for good when she converted the shot of the day; a 25 yarder from the right side of the field that bent into the left half of the Lycoming net. Winey had no chance of making a stop on the perfectly placed attempt in the 69th minute.
Despite being outplayed for much of the contest, Lycoming was in it until the final seconds ticked away. The Dutchmen outshot the Warriors 23-6 for the game and earned eight corner kicks while shutting out the home team in that department.
The victory improved Lebanon Valley to 10-2-1 on the year and 2-1 in Commonwealth play. The Dutchmen's next outing is an early morning road matchup with league foe Alvernia on Saturday, Oct. 18. Kickoff in Reading is set for 11 a.m.
