ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Lebanon Valley secured the Commonwealth Conference's top seed, sweeping Elizabethtown by 1-0 and 6-2 scores in the regular-season finale Saturday.
The Dutchmen (29-5-1, 17-1 CC) will play the winner of 4th-seeded Hood and 5th-seeded Stevenson when they host the Commonwealth Conference tournament Friday at 2 p.m. Alvernia will be the #2 seed and Messiah the #3. As the top seed, LVC effectively gets a bye from the early games and will have to play just once on the tournament's opening day.
Lebanon Valley needed to win only one game to secure the top spot, and got it with a three-hit shutout by
Sam Derr (19-4) in the opener. The nightcap turned wilder as LVC fought back from a 2-0 deficit to win with four runs in the seventh as
Haley Neff finished the regular season unbeaten at 9-0.
In the opener, Derr faced just four over the minimum to hold Elizabethtown at bay. The Dutchmen left runners in scoring position in the first, second, and third, and plated their only run of the game in the fourth when Derr helped herself by knocking in
Katie Deardorff. LVC threatened for more in the sixth but left the bases loaded.
In game two, E-town scored runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 2-0 lead, but LVC responded by batting around in the sixth and seventh to win it.
Kelli Valle and
Mary Readinger drove in Derr and
Steffani Secola, respectively, to tie the game in the sixth, and two-run doubles by
Allie Hartman and Neff proved decisive in the seventh as they took the 6-2 lead. Neff put the Blue Jays down in order in the last of the inning to earn the win.
