Softball Sweeps Hood On Secola Walk-Off

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Softball
Lebanon Valley 4, Hood 0
Lebanon Valley 10, Hood 2 (6 inn.)

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Steff Secola's walk-off home run in game two punctuated a doubleheader sweep of Hood Wednesday as Lebanon Valley improved to 13-1 in Commonwealth Conference play.

The Dutchmen (25-4-1) beat Hood 4-0 in the opener, then ended it with a 10-2 six-inning victory in game two thanks to Secola's three-run jack.

Sam Derr (17-3) tied the LVC single-season record for wins by a pitcher, co-held by Val Malizzia '11 and Kristen Palmerio '12, as she threw a five-hit shutout in the opener. Haley Neff (7-0) remained undefeated as she scattered six hits in the nightcap.

In game one, LVC held a 1-0 lead for most of the game after Katie Deardorff worked her way to around in the third to score on a wild pitch. The insurance came in the sixth, when the Dutchmen took advantage of two Hood errors to plate three. Allie Hartman led off with a walk, and Steff Secola reached when her sacrifice bunt resulted in an error. Emily Johnson also reached on an error to load the bases, and that set up Kelli Valle, who blooped a single to left, and Jorey Aumiller, who lined a shot off the shortstop to score two more runs late in the frame.

Derr threw an efficient 82-pitch outing and did not issue a walk, while counterpart Keerstie Robinson struck out four and allowed two earned in a solid effort.

Game two saw LVC again jump on a Hood error to score after Kali Ball's wide throw extended the first inning and allowed Tessa Deardorff and Steff Secola score runs. Derr singled in Jorey Aumiller in the second to go up 3-0, but Hood tightened the game with their only runs of the day thanks Alex Sivic's two-run blast to left in the fifth.

LVC responded well, however, scoring four in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the game. In the fifth, all four Dutchmen runs were unearned after an early error and a passed ball helped Sam Shimp and Secola score, and Katie Deardorff singled in two more to end the inning. In the sixth, Derr doubled and Hartman singled to put two on for Secola, who roped the first pitch she saw to left for the 10-2 win.

The Dutchmen return home for their final regular season date Saturday, hosting Arcadia for Senior Day.
