CLERMONT, Fla. – Lebanon Valley had a fantastic start to its softball season with a pair of wins at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla., Monday. The Dutchmen picked up an 8-1 win in the morning game against John Carroll and an 8-7 win over Thiel in their afternoon game.
The Dutchmen (2-0) essentially won their first game in the first inning on a three-run rally.
Sam Derr knocked in the first run on a popup to short.
Steffani Secola singled in the second, and
Allie Hartman scored on a passed ball for the third.
Five more runs crossed the plate in the sixth. The biggest blow was a two-run double by Derr that scored
Katie Deardorff and
Tessa Deardorff.
Angela Harris and Secola each had RBI singles in the inning, and Harris came around to score on an error.
Derr had a strong showing in the circle, pitching seven innings and allowing one run on six hits and two walks. She struck out one.
LVC trailed 7-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth against Thiel before climbing back and winning the game on a walkoff in the seventh.
The Dutchmen posted five runs on six hits with the help of a pair of errors in the fifth to make it a 7-5 game.
Katie Deardorff, Derr, Hayley Neff, and
Alexa Maddy each had RBIs in the frame.
Samantha Shimp scored on a throwing error.
Tessa Deardorff led off the sixth with a walk and stole second. She came around to score on an RBI single by
Katie Deardorff, who stole second and scored on a sac fly by Derr to tie the game.
Katie Deardorff hit a bases-loaded sac fly to left in the next inning to send Harris home and earn LVC the win.
Neff made her first collegiate start in the circle, allowing seven runs – five earned – on 12 hits and three walks over five innings.
Jasmine Dutton and Derr pitched in relief.
LVC faces Muhlenberg and Adrian Tuesday.
