Lebanon Valley 51, Montclair State 71
ANNVILLE, Pa. - #20 Lebanon Valley run in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championships ended in a 71-51 loss to Montclair State in the second round of play Saturday night.
Kiely Chaklos and
Caitlin Bach led the squad with 10 points each. Bach notched another double-double with 11 rebounds.
Tierney Hiltz and
Renee Fritz scored eight points each.
The win advances Montclair State to the Sweet 16, where the Red Hawks (29-0) will see either Christopher Newport or Marymount (Va.). That game is slated to be played March 8 at a site to be determined.
LVC advanced to the second round by beating Baruch 59-53 Friday night in the opening round. This is the fourth consecutive season that the Dutchmen were able to secure a tournament bid.
The Dutchmen were outrebounded 41-31 and committed a 25 turnovers, granting some opportunities for Montclair State. The Red Hawks have made a habit of maximizing opportunities this season with an undefeated record that now includes a New Jersey Athletic Conference title and a pair of NCAA Tournament wins.
The Red Hawks held a lead for nearly 37 minutes after breaking an early 4-4 tie and fought tirelessly to keep the Dutchmen from closing in. Hiltz and Bach came on strong in the second half with six points each, and the team shot for a better percentage as the game wore on.
Taylor Jeffers led Montclair State in scoring with 16 points. Shalette Brown and Nicosia Henry fell in close behind her with 15 points each.
