First Time For Everything
Lebanon Valley and Albright are each making their first appearances in the postseason, but each arrived in quite different ways. Albright, in its first season of existence, blew through its schedule to record a 15-2 record and 5-1 in conference play (with a lone loss coming against Lycoming); LVC had to wait a week at the end of the regular season to get help and get in the playoff field, ironically thanks to Albright's 9-7 win over Messiah on April 28. The Dutchmen are in their third season of existence in the modern era, and had one MAC title during the original era of lacrosse, in 1968.
During The Regular Season
LVC gave Albright one of its toughest tests in a 12-11 loss in Reading back on April 18, led by a program-record seven goals from
Malik Pedroso. The game was virtually even on paper, and Phil Potter's last-minute goal for Albright capped a five-goal fourth-quarter rally. LVC had led 9-7 in the fourth.
The Playoffs
The three-round tournament will determine the Middle Atlantic Conference's single automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. On the Commonwealth Conference side, the LVC-Albright winner will meet the Widener-Lycoming winner on Thursday at the higher seed; that winner will face the winner of the Freedom Conference's bracket on Saturday for the MAC title.
Scouting LVC
The Dutchmen are led on offense by
Malik Pedroso, who has 33 goals and 26 assists as a sophomore, including a team-best four man-up strikes. He's joined on the first attack by
Alex Beard (17g, 15a) and
Matt Roupe (20g, 3a), and
Ian Schmid (13g, 6a),
Jordan Mayr (10g, 6a), and
CJ Adams (8g, 3a) have been key offensive generators. LSM
Ryan Lanigan is one of the CC's top all-around players, scoring seven goals while causing a team-high 45 turnovers with 70 ground balls.
Andrew Kruter has developed into a shutdown defender with 44 ground balls and 26 caused turnovers. A huge asset for LVC is
Scott Sutton on face-offs; the junior has a .630 success rate, the best in the conference.
Scouting Albright
The Lions' Cinderella inaugural season has been led by Dan Foote (44g, 8a) and TJ Holston (36g, 16a), Bryan Smith (29g, 22a), and Ryan Turner (29g, 6a) as Albright has averaged nearly 14 goals per game. Andrew Torak has been one of the CC's top goalkeepers with a 7.33 GAA and .558 save percentage. Defensively, Michael Donohoe leads the team with 50 caused turnovers. Darian Meador has been excellent on the X, winning 56.2% of faceoffs with 120 ground balls.
