Softball Opens With a Pair of Wins

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Dutchmen got their season off to a fine start with a 5-0 shutout over Muhlenberg Monday morning at the National Training Center.
 
Senior Kristen Palmerio allowed five hits and four walks but struck out eight batters to collect her first win of the season.
 
She was equally impressive from the batter's box, as she led LVC with three hits and two runs scored.
 
Senior catcher Chelsea Detwiler put the Dutchmen on the board with a solo homerun to left center in the second inning.
 
Palmerio came around to score in the third when sophomore first baseman Allison Hartman homered to right, giving the Dutchmen a 3-0 lead.
 
Sophomore second baseman Katie Deardorff singled in freshman Tessa Deardorff in the fourth inning for her first collegiate run scored. The younger Deardorff entered the game as a pinch runner for junior third baseman Alexa Maddy.
 
Hartman gave the team its final insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single that scored Palmerio.
 
First baseman Kelly Kline led the Mules with two hits.

CLERMONT, Fla. – In their second game of the day, the Dutchmen were able to score eight runs on just six hits to hammer past Saint Vincent, 8-1.
 
Shannon Hite singled, stole second, and scored on a groundout in the first to give the Bearcats their only lead of the game in the first.
 
From then on, it was all LVC (2-0). The Dutchmen parlayed their six hits with six walks and three errors for the big win. Tessa and Katie Deardorff and Palmerio combined for three consecutive, bases loaded singles to add three runs to the scoreboard. Hartman reached on an error to short in the next at bat, driving in Katie Deardorff.
 
Six runners reached base in the second on just three hits. Angela Harris and Jasmine Dutton both walked and came around to score runs.
 
Steph Hulme created the team's fifth run in the fifth inning when she singled, stole two bags, and scored on an error.
 
Palmerio, Hartman, and Hulme each knocked in runs in the sixth to sure up the win. Both Deardorffs and senior Chelsea Kehr each crossed the plate. Kehr was in as a pinch runner for Hartman, who reached on an RBI fielder's choice.
 
Dutton earned the win on the mound, going all seven innings and striking out one. She allowed one run on four hits and three walks.

LVC will play a doubleheader against Saint Mary's Tuesday morning with game times set for 9 and 11 a.m.
