READING, Pa. – #13 Messiah posted a 2-0 win over Lebanon Valley softball Friday afternoon at the Commonwealth Conference Championship Tournament to advance in the winner's bracket. The Dutchmen move on to face the winner of Arcadia - Lycoming at 11 a.m. Saturday in the double elimination tournament.
LVC had seven runners reach base against Messiah on just four hits, but fell short of breaking up the shutout.
Messiah grabbed the early lead with a run in the first inning. Sara Seneca hit a one-out single to center and scored off a single through the left side by Stephanie Schell.
The best chance for Lebanon Valley to score came in the second inning with
Marisa Krause and
Steffani Secola notching singles to reach base. Krause looked to reach third, but was tagged out on a fielder's choice.
Adding to their lead in the third, the Falcons scored one run to take a 2-0 advantage. Seneca again hit a single and went on to steal second. A sacrifice fly to right by Jaclyn Markel scored Seneca for the final run of the contest.
Jess Rhoads pitched the complete game for Messiah, while
Val Malizzia suffered the loss. She allowed two runs on six hits and struck out two batters.
In the first game of the day, LVC defeated Lycoming 1-0.
Kristen Palmerio and
Katie Deardorff combined to tallying four of LVC's five hits, while
Laura Snyder notched her fourth shutout of the season.
The Dutchmen had two runners reach base in the second, third, and fifth innings but were held off the scoresheet.
Lycoming had just three runners on base in the game, including two in the second inning.
LVC broke up the shutout in the seventh. Secola drew a leadoff walk and
Chelsea Artz pinch ran for the Dutchmen. A sacrifice hit from Snyder advanced Artz and a two-out single to right by Deardorff scored the winning run.
In the circle, Snyder pitched the complete game. She held the Warriors to two hits and struck out nine.
