Preview: First-Time Dutchmen Crash MAC Playoffs

ANNVILLE, Pa. - There's a first time for everything, and for the Lebanon Valley College women's lacrosse team, that means a trip to Alvernia University on Tuesday for their inaugural Middle Atlantic Conference playoff appearance.

In just their second season of varsity play since restarting the program in 2010, the Dutchmen (8-7, 7-5 MAC) earned the conference's fifth seed and visit the fourth-seeded Crusaders (10-6, 7-5) Tuesday at 5 p.m. in a quarterfinal game, with the winner playing #2 seed Elizabethtown in the semifinals.

Live video and statistics of the game will be available in the calendar sidebar on GoDutchmen.com at game time.

Although Alvernia beat LVC 17-8 during the regular season at Arnold Field, the Dutchmen are a far different and more mature team than when they met in the season opener all the way back on March 2. LVC suffered a shaky start in that game, falling behind 9-2 at the half before shaking off their opening game jitters to score six in a promising second half.

Since that game, however, LVC's offense has fired on all cylinders, averaging 13 goals per game led by the dynamic duo of Hana Krechel (67 G, 25 A) and Lindsey Buckman (56 G, 5 A), with captain Allison McGinniss (19 G, 11 A) setting up the attack behind net. Lebanon Valley qualified for the playoffs on the final day of the regular season, winning 16-12 at Manhattanville in a winner-take-all game.

Alvernia ended its season losing four of its last five, including a triple-overtime loss at Manhattanville and a one-goal setback at Widener on Friday - both teams that LVC beat down the stretch. A balanced attack comes from Alyssa Verillo (41 G, 16 A) and Felicia Suppel (41 G, 11 A) along with Sarah George (36 G, 13 A) and Allison Bainbridge (33 G, 19 A), but 10 players have 10 or more goals overall. The Crusaders' ability to control the draw has been especially key - they lead opponents by a huge 241-165 margin in the circle.
