MADISON, N.J. - Two fourth-quarter goals by Drew Canfield led FDU-Florham back from a goal down to edge Lebanon Valley, 5-4, in a defensive battle on Saturday.
The Dutchmen (4-7, 2-4 MAC) held a 4-3 lead heading into the final period but were unable to score as the Devils (5-5, 3-3 MAC) tied it early in the fourth before going ahead on Canfield's strike with 5:52 remaining. Four of Lebanon Valley's seven losses have now come by one goal.
Malik Pedroso scored twice, and
Alex Beard and
CJ Adams added goals for the Dutchmen. Canfield scored four for the Devils, with Jake Higgins recording FDU's other goal.
The loss spoiled a tremendous defensive effort by LVC, including 14 saves from
Bryan Lockward and five caused turnovers and three ground balls from defender
Ryan Lanigan. Dino Vitale stopped nine to pick up the win.
The Devils took a quick 2-0 lead to start the game, but two goals from Pedroso tied the game at 2-2 before Beard hit late in the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead into the break.
Canfield came out of the break to tie it midway through the third quarter, but Adams converted Beard's feed just 28 seconds later to take a 4-3 lead into the fourth quarter. Canfield got his hat trick with the equalizer less than four minutes into the quarter, and he generated the game-winner with a caused turnover and feed from Paul Colflesh with 5:52 to go.
The chances were there for the Dutchmen, but shots by Adams, Pedroso, and
Jordan Mayr were off the mark in the final moments, including two late shots in the final 10 seconds.
LVC led 34-30 on shots, while the Devils were up 8-5 on face-offs and 30-17 on ground balls.
The Dutchmen return home to host King's on Wednesday.
