ANNVILLE, Pa. – Strong pitching propelled Lebanon Valley softball to register its first shutout sweep of the season, posting 4-0 and 7-0 wins over Albright Thursday afternoon.
Senior
Laura Snyder threw her second career no-hitter in game one to lead Lebanon Valley. Pitching the complete game, she walked two and struck out 10 batters, along with tallying a team-high two RBI in the 4-0 win.
Marisa Krause was perfect in the second game, going 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI. Allison Hartman and
Katie Freeman both tallied two hits and two RBI, while
Val Malizzia picked up her eighth win of the season.
GAME ONE
LVC took an early lead with three runs in the second inning. Allison Hartman led off with single and moved to second after a sacrifice bunt. A double from
Alexa Maddy scored Hartman, and a triple from Snyder scored the second run.
Chelsea Kehr's sacrifice fly finished the scoring for the Dutchmen.
The game's final run came in the sixth inning when
Chelsea Kehr drew a one-out and rounded the bases off
Kristen Palmerio's triple to right center.
Holding a 4-0 lead, the game headed to the seventh inning where Albright had just one runner reach base before back-to-back strikeouts sealed LVC's victory.
GAME TWO
Katie Deardorff opened the second game with a bunt single and made her way to third base, but tough defense by Albright left her stranded in the base paths.
Albright challenged in the fourth, putting two runners in scoring position. With the leadoff batter hit by a pitch, an infield ball from Kiersten Gilfoy turned into a fielder's choice and both runners were safe. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third, but two groundouts ended the inning.
LVC broke through in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs. With one out,
Steffani Secola reached first on an error and pinch runner
Chelsea Artz stole second. A single by
Katie Freeman scored Artz, while a double to left field sent Freeman home.
Marisa Krause continued with a single to left to score Hartman for the third run.
The Dutchmen notched four more runs in the fifth for a 7-0 lead.
Kristen Palmerio reached base on a double to left center and scored after a single to center by
Meghan Donoghue. Secola drew a walk and Freeman sent one run home with a single. Hartman followed with a single to score Secola and a sacrifice fly from Krause sent the final run home.
Albright broke up Malizzia's no-hitter in the sixth inning with two players reaching base off singles. Tough defense from the Dutchmen stranded runners in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the shutout.
Malizzia allowed just three hits through seven innings of work and struck out six.
Lebanon Valley travels to Lycoming for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. The game will be played at the Loyalsock Township High School facility.
