Malizzia Becomes All-Time Wins Leader

READING, Pa. – Lebanon Valley softball continued Commonwealth Conference action Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with Alvernia. The Crusaders claimed an 8-7 win in eight innings, while the Dutchmen posted a 5-1 win in the second game.

In a record-setting day, Val Malizzia picked up the win in game two to become LVC's all-time wins leader. With 46 career wins, Malizzia passed the previous record of 45 wins set by Jenn Roberts '07.

Meghan Donoghue and Laura Snyder also broke records against the Crusaders. Donoghue notched her 100th career hit, while Snyder registered her 500th career strikeout. Earlier this season, Snyder became the program's all-time strikeouts leader.

Notching 14 hits in the first game, four players tallied two hits each for the Dutchmen and Allison Hartman led the way with two RBI.

Lebanon Valley scored one run in the second inning for the early lead behind a solo home run from Hartman. The homer was her second of the season.

Alvernia responded in the fourth inning with two runs to go up 2-1. Katie Manowski crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly and Miranda Peto scored on a passed ball.

The Dutchmen regained the advantage in the fourth inning with five runs to take a four run lead. Laura Snyder and Alexa maddy opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Chelsea Kehr notched a single to load the bases. Returning to the top of the order, Katie Deardorff reached on an error while Snyder and Maddy scored. Kehr went on to score off a single by Meghan Donoghue and Deardorff crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Hartman finished the inning with a double to score Donoghue.

Tallying three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning, Alvernia cut the lead to one. The Crusaders tied the score in the fifth inning with Danielle Kitchen reaching after being hit by a pitch and scoring on a single up the middle.

The Crusaders added another run in the sixth to take a one run lead. LVC followed in the seventh with Deardorff scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game. The Dutchmen had three other players reach third base in the inning, but strong defense by Alvernia stranded the runners.

Holding Alvernia scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, the game headed to extra innings. LVC failed to score in the eighth with only one runner reaching base, and the Crusaders claimed the win after a walk-off solo homer by Samantha Penk.

Snyder pitched six innings for the Dutchmen and struck out eight batters, while Malizzia finished the game.

In game two, Alvernia opened the game with a run in the first for the early lead. Penk reached on an error and rounded the bases on a double to left center by Amanda Galanti. Limiting the Crusaders to just five hits in the game, their only run came in the first.

Lebanon Valley reached the scoreboard in the fifth inning with two runs. Snyder started the inning with a single to right field and advanced to second after Deardorff drew a walk. With two outs, Donoghue reached on an error and Snyder scored. A bases loaded walk to Hartman sent Deardorff home for the final run of the inning.

The Dutchmen finished the scoring in the sixth with three runs. Steph Hulme led off with a single up the middle and advanced after a sacrifice bunt by Snyder. A double by Linley Eberhart scored Hulme and a single from Kristen Palmerio scored Eberhart. Donoghue sent the final runner home with a double.

Malizzia recorded the win after pitching the complete game. She allowed one run on five hits and struck out two.

LVC hosts Delaware Valley on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
