ANNVILLE, Pa. - For the third time in as many years, the Lebanon Valley women's basketball team was crowned champions of the Rinso Marquette Tournament Saturday evening.
The Dutchmen (3-0) gained an immediate lead and never surrendered in a 55-42 win over Penn State Harrisburg (1-1).
Liz Borgia came out with a nose for the basket, scoring the Dutchmen's first five points of the game on a free throw and a pair of layups. She scored seven points in a 17-7 opening run that fueled a 21-17 Dutchmen lead at halftime.
She and
Caitlin Bach worked to give the team chances throughout the half with six rebounds each.
Bach was limited to just nine minutes in the half coming off of a 17-point performance in game one against Gallaudet.
Tierney Hiltz opened the second half with a layup to give the Dutchmen a 23-17 edge. Hiltz and Murphy put up a pair of baskets each during an 11-2 run that gave the Dutchmen a 13-point lead at 32-19 with 13:27 to play.
The Lions were eventually able to shave that lead down to five points, but LVC remained in control on unanswered baskets from Hiltz, Borgia, and
Kiely Chaklos, and went up 44-33 with 3:33 to play.
Later, the Dutchmen used six successful shots from the free throw line to gain their largest lead of the game, 15 points, at 55-40 with 34 seconds to play. When the buzzer went off, LVC walked away with a 55-42 win.
Bach finished with four points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes of limited playing time. She was named the tournament most valuable player.
Borgia led the offense with 16 points on the night. Fritz finished with 11.
Hiltz scored eight points and led the defense with eight boards. She was also the Dutchmen's connector with a game-high four assists. For her work, she was also named to the all-tournament team.
LVC plays at Susquehanna Tuesday at 7 p.m. in its first road test of the season.
