The LVC-Albright Series
This is the 91st meeting in the rivalry ... Albright leads 56-31-3 ... It is the most-played rivalry in LVC history, and the oldest continuous, having been played every year since 1947 (excluding World War II years, it has been going every year since 1924) ... LVC has won just twice in the past 15 meetings, in 2006 and 2010 ... The first meeting was a 10-3 LVC win on Nov. 2, 1898 ... An unknown dispute led to a gap in the series between 1903 and 1912, despite the fact that Albright at that time was located in Myerstown in Lebanon County ...
Jim Monos is 9-9 vs. the Lions ... LVC has not won consecutive games against Albright since a seven-game win streak from1988 to 1994.
“The March”
Tradition holds that if Lebanon Valley beats Albright, its oldest rival, then the LVC student body is to march to the President's home, Kreiderheim, and request the day before Thanksgiving off from school. That day is usually a half-day of classes. Last year, an orderly mob of Dutchmen, led by the football team and Annville police and fire personnel, marched from campus up Rt. 934 and the hill to Kreiderheim, where they were granted the day off.
Noting LVC's Offense
LVC had four new starters on offense for the Stevenson game, at fullback (
Evan Fink), left guard (Mike Attanasio), right tackle (
Chris Taggart), and wide receiver (
Yahya McIntyre) ... Fink and Taggart are expected to start again vs. Albright, with LG
Brendan Kozub and WR
Joey Miller returning ... The Dutchmen offense scored on their first nine possessions vs. Stevenson ... Their 61 points was the most since 1989 ... LVC pulled out 518 yards of offense, including 252 on the ground ...
Colt Zarilla threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns, completing 17 of 25 attempts ... Backup
Leo Kyte played much of the second half, completing just one pass but it was a touchdown to
Jimmie Miller, the first for both ...
Ben Guiles scored three touchdowns on just 10 touches to break the LVC all-time mark ...
Conrad Heisey led all rushers with 72 yards in the second half ... LVC had seven different backs get touches ...
Tim Picerno led receivers with five catches for 35 yards and a leaping touchdown ... McIntyre also caught a touchdown, the first of his career, on a diving one-foot-in play to the sideline ... He finished with 64 yards on three catches ... Tight end
Matt Mankiewicz caught three passes for 63 yards.
Noting LVC's Defense
Kevin Smith has moved into the starting nose tackle spot for injured
Nick Bowne ...
DJ Poligone remains at OLB for
Andrew Hurst, with
Matt Morell the back-up ... Linebacker
Andrew Burkholder made an impact against Stevenson, returning an interception 88 yards for a touchdown ... It was the third-longest interception return in LVC history ...
LVC's starters held Stevenson to just 147 yards - including 42 on the ground - in the first half while allowing only a single touchdown ... The defense generated three turnovers, with Burkholder's pick along with fumble recoveries by
Todd Mika and
Nate Kauffman ...
Jason Gigous led LVC with seven tackles and a forced fumble ...
Kevin Smith and
Cory Homer also forced fumbles ... Smith had four tackles with a half for a loss and two hurries ...
Dachonn Johnson, in his first varsity experience, had five second-half tackles with a pass break-up ... With virtually everyone seeing playing time, 29 different Dutchmen made a tackle against Stevenson.
Noting LVC's Specialists
Sean Fakete had a record-setting game vs. Stevenson, kicking field goals from 22 and 30 yards and hitting seven PATs to break the single-game kicking scoring record with 13 points ... Fakete was 7-for-7 on PATs ... He also kicked off 11 times, averaging 57.5 yards but putting two out of bounds ... LVC kick return game was fantastic, with
Aaron Miller taking three back for 27.3 yard average and a long of 45 yards, and
Jimmie Miller taking one back for 49 yards ... LVC's kick return unit is ranked atop the MAC ...
Kelly Saylor had a 21-yard punt return ...
Colt Zarilla had to punt just once, a 36-yarder.
Guiles Sets TD Mark, Moving Up Rushing List
Senior
Ben Guiles continues to break records, becoming LVC's all-time rushing touchdown leader with his 36th against Stevenson in Week 4. One game prior to that, at Delaware Valley, Guiles became the third player in LVC history to rush for 3,000 career yards. Guiles is now 36 yards away from surpassing Rick Coleman '78 for second on the all-time list. The senior also set single-game records for most touchdowns (5) and points (30) in a game during the season opener against Gettysburg.
Fakete's Big Day
Sophomore kicker
Sean Fakete continues to be a reliable option for the Dutchmen, and he ended up with a record-break day against Stevenson that earned him MAC Special Team Player of the Week honors. Fakete broke the record for points in a game by a kicker with 13 (two field goals and seven PATs) while tying the single-game PAT mark with seven. Between PATs, field goals, and kickoffs, Fakete kicked 20 times against Stevenson - not including LVC's final PAT which failed on a bad snap.
Six New Starters vs. Stevenson
LVC has been hit by injuries and illness early in the season, and ended up swapping two defensive and four offensive starters in Week 4 against Stevenson.
Kevin Smith started at nose tackle with
Nick Bowne out and
DJ Poligone was at outside linebacker for
Andrew Hurst; on offense,
Evan Fink took over at fullback for
Alex Kirchner,
Yahya McIntyre started at wide receiver for
Joey Miller (Miller returns vs. Albright), Mike Attanasio started at left guard for
Brendan Kozub (Kozub also returns), and
Chris Taggart got the nod at right tackle for
Zach Nace.
LVC Receives Top 25 Votes
The Dutchmen didn't play a down last week, but that didn't stop them from adding four votes in this week's d3football.com Top 25. LVC got five votes, up one from Week 3.
LVC-Albright Going Back to November In 2012
Although historically a late-season game, this year's LVC-Albright game is taking place on the earliest date since 2001, when it was played on Oct. 6. The reason for that is an unbalanced MAC schedule due to the addition of Stevenson; next year's addition of Misericordia will balance the slate and put LVC-Albright back to the final day of the regular season, along with other rivalry games like Widener-Delaware Valley and King's-Wilkes. The Albright game has been in November in seven of the last eight years, although notably it was played in either September or October during the 1990s.
Dutchmen Appear Among NCAA Statistical Leaders
The NCAA's latest statistical rankings show the Dutchmen well-represented in the top 50.
Ben Guiles is tied for fourth in scoring, averaging 15.0 points per game. Other notables:
Colt Zarilla is 22nd in passing efficiency (161.5),
Sean Fakete is 34th in field goals (1 per game), and
Cory Homer is 25th in tackles for loss (1.88 per game).
Albright Quick Look
The Lions began the season on fire with a 4-0 start before falling back to Earth last week with a 35-13 loss at Lycoming. Albright has scored 40+ points in three of five games this year led by an air attack averaging 295 yards per game. Quarterbacks Adam Galczynski and TJ Luddy have both been excellent, with Galczynski - the starter - completing 60% of his passes for 924 yards and eight touchdowns and Luddy making 66% of his tries for 509 yards and four scores. Scott Pillar has been the star receiver, catching 30 passes for 599 yards and seven TDs. On the ground, Josan Holmes averages 52.6 yards per game and has four touchdowns.
Defensively, the Lions have been keyed by one of the MAC's top run defenses, allowing just 109 yards per game. Linebacker Ryan Ott leads the team with 47 tackles - including 4.5 for a loss - and the Albright secondary is led by Drew Peterson's three interceptions. Albright is +4 on turnovers.
