LYNCHBURG, Va. - #6 Lebanon Valley College opened its season by passing a tough test, beating #13 Lynchburg 4-1 on Saturday behind two goals apiece from
Allison Bicher and
Caitlin Vasey.
The Dutchmen (1-0) played some outstanding defense as well, with
Christine Poletti making eight saves in her first career start as LVC allowed just one goal on 23 Lynchburg (1-1) shots.
Bicher put her team up 11:29 into the game with an unassisted goal as she stuffed in a rebound, then made it 2-0 a minute after halftime thanks to Vasey's feed.
Vasey, the 2009 Commonwealth Conference rookie of the year, picked up where she left off, scoring twice more at the 45:38 and 61:17 marks to give LVC a comfortable cushion.
Haley Stough's goal at 65:27 spoiled the clean sheet for Poletti after the Dutchmen had repelled 13 second-half shots.
Lynchburg starting keeper Tiffany Frye made nine saves; Hannah Myers made one stop in 7:05 of clean-up duty.
LVC led 25-23 on shots and 10-6 on penalty corners. Bicher and Vasey both took five shots, with
Jocelyn Novak and
Shelly Lobach each trying four. Lindsay Leonard took three shots for the Hornets.
Lebanon Valley opens at home Thursday, hosting #15 Johns Hopkins.
