ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley softball came from behind in the first game of a doubleheader with Alvernia Saturday to post a 7-5 win in nine innings, and used heavy hitting to post an 11-0 shutout in the nightcap.
In the first game, senior
Caitlin Keller and classmate
Kristen Uhas pulled off heroics on senior day at the field. Keller hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to tie the score and Uhas notched a walk-off two-run home run to claim the victory. Keller, LVC's all-time doubles leader added to her tally with her 30th in game one.
Three home runs propelled the Dutchmen in game two, with junior
Meghan Donoghue hitting one and classmate
Katie Freeman ripping two.
GAME ONE
The Dutchmen struck early, scoring three runs on four hits. Sophomore
Kerri Datres opened with a double to left field and classmate
Kristen Palmerio singled off a bunt. A sacrifice fly to right by junior
Katie Freeman scored Datres and senior
Kristen Uhas sent another runner home off a single.
Alvernia responded quickly, scoring three runs to tie the score in the second. One run scored off an error while hits from Megan McCafferty and Janelle Lynch scored the two others.
Both teams traded opportunities through the remainder of the contest but the score stayed tied at three.
The Crusaders started extra innings scoring two runs on three hits. With one out, Lynch singled and advanced on a single bunt by Miranda Peto. Both runners scored off an LVC error to take a 5-3 lead.
With a two-run deficit, sophomore
Steph Hulme started LVC off in the eighth with a single. Uhas then reached first on a single and Hulme was called out at third on a fielder's choice. A single by freshman
Steffani Secola loaded the bases with one out, and Keller scored two with a double to right center, tying the score at five aside. Alvernia pitcher Deanna Dungee retired the next two batters to extend the game.
LVC starter
Val Malizzia retired all three batters in the eighth to set up the comeback victory. Donoghue hit a single with one out and Uhas posted her second home run of the season to right field for the 7-5 win.
Malizzia allowed eight hits through nine innings and struck out four.
GAME TWO
LVC came out hitting early, scoring three runs in the first. Datres started off with a single and Palmerio reached on an error. Donoghue then hit a home run to right field, scoring both runners.
Freeman added to LVC's lead in the third with a two-run home run to center field.
Secola then opened the fourth inning with a single up the middle and two straight walks loaded the bases. Palmerio singled to scored one run and a hit to left field by Donoghue sent two more runners home. Freeman then notched her second home run of the game, a three-run shot to center for the 11-0 lead. A strikeout and ground out ended the inning.
Junior
Laura Snyder retired all three batters in the fifth for her eighth shutout of the season. Snyder pitched all five innings for LVC, allowing just three hits and striking out four.
Lebanon Valley travels to Delaware Valley on Monday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
