EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Strong pitching led Lebanon Valley softball to two shutout victories over Wilkes Thursday afternoon. Junior
Val Malizzia pitched the first game, striking out nine, while classmate
Laura Snyder tossed the nightcap and posted 10 strikeouts.
The Dutchmen tallied a 7-0 and 4-0 win to improve to 25-7 on the season and extended their win streak to six games.
GAME ONE
Junior
Meghan Donoghue led the team, notching two hits, a run and three RBIs. Senior
Caitlin Keller also recorded two hits in three at-bats.
LVC started off early, scoring three runs. Sophomore
Kerri Datres opened with a single to left and moved to second off a sacrifice bunt from classmate
Kristen Palmerio, who reached base off a throwing error. Donoghue then hit a home run to left field, her team-leading fourth of the season to score three runs.
The Dutchmen added three more runs in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Keller hit a double to center and advanced to third and scored on an error that allowed senior
Janey Kozlowski to reach third. A sacrifice fly from Datres scored Kozlowski, and Palmerio continued with a home run to right field. The homer was her second this season.
Senior
Kristen Uhas scored the game's final run in the fifth with a solo home run to right field, her first of the year.
Malizzia allowed just four hits through seven innings for her fourth shutout of the season.
GAME TWO
Lebanon Valley didn't strike until the third, scoring all four runs in the inning. Datres started with a single to shortstop, moved to second off a single and to third on the same play after an error. A single to center from Uhas scored a run and another crossed home plate off an error. Sophomore
Chelsea Detwiler then hit a two-run double to left field with two outs.
Snyder recorded her seventh shutout of the season, allowing just two hits for the win.
The Dutchmen host Alvernia on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
