ANNVILLE, Pa. - Kean University used some timely hitting and dominant pitching to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Lebanon Valley College, 3-0 and 2-0, on Thursday.
It was the first time in four years that the Dutchmen (16-6) had surrendered a home doubleheader sweep, since they lost a pair to Moravian in 2007.
LVC couldn't get their bats going despite nine hits in game one with nine left on base, and they were shut down by Cassie Shotwell in the nightcap as she scattered three hits in the shutout.
GAME ONE
Kean got all the scoring they would need in the first inning as Allison Lizzi bombed a home run to straightaway center to score Katie Schuh and give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
LVC would threaten, leaving runners on in every inning but the seventh, but the Dutchmen couldn't find any runs as Courtney Smyth got out of trouble again and again. Meanwhile, Kean added an insurance run when Katie Yard singled in Shotwell in the sixth to finish up the 3-0 game.
Kristen Palmerio (2-2) took the loss while allowing eight hits and three runs in 5.1 innings for LVC, while
Laura Snyder did not surrender a hit in 1.2 innings of relief.
GAME TWO
LVC had even less success at the plate in the nightcap as Shotwell held them to three hits while striking out five in the complete-game effort. Lebanon Valley only put a single runner in scoring position when
Caitlin Keller doubled to lead off the fifth.
Kean's scoring came in the sixth when Shotwell helped herself with an RBI base knock to right and Yard followed with another single to make it a 2-0 game.
Snyder started game two and allowed one hit through three, while
Val Malizzia (9-3) took the loss, giving up five hits and two runs.
The Dutchmen will host Widener on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
