Softball Opens Season With Two Wins

CLERMONT, Fla. – Lebanon Valley softball opened the 2010 season with two wins at the National Softball Training Center. The Dutchmen began the day with a 3-2 win over Hiram and concluded with a 4-0 shutout of Lycoming.
 
In the game against Hiram, sophomore Kerri Datres and senior Kristen Uhas both notched two hits. Uhas reached third off an overthrow after initially hitting a single, and ended up recording all three RBIs for the Dutchmen.
 
Junior Meghan Donoghue notched a double and classmate Marisa Krause added a single in the game. Both players rounded the bases on the single by Uhas.
 
Chelsea Artz put down two sacrifice bunts, recording a hit on the first bunt and reaching on an error the second time.
 
In the sixth inning, LVC held a 2-1 lead when Hiram's Kelly Langland hit a triple to right field. Artz fielded the ball and threw to Donoghue who completed the play by tossing the ball to catcher Caitlin Keller for the out.
 
Junior Val Malizzia pitched the complete game for LVC, posting five strikeouts and allowing just one walk.
 
In the second game of the day, LVC played familiar foe Lycoming in a change of schedule and posted its first shutout win of the season.
 
Datres continued her success, tallying two singles and a walk, along with scoring Linley Eberhart.
 
Freshman Steffani Secola added a double and crossed the plate off a single by sophomore Chelsea Detwiler. Steph Hulme posted a single and two walks in the game, and scored off a double by Eberhart.
 
Junior Laura Snyder pitched the complete game for LVC, posting a career-high 16 strikeouts in the win and tying a school record for most strikeouts in a single season game. The record was set by Jenn Roberts '07 after she posted 16 strikeouts two times in her career.
 
LVC continues spring break play in Florida with two games on Tuesday, starting with Concordia at 11:30 a.m. and following with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 3:30 p.m.
