ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley held an undefeated Haverford team at bay for more than 89 minutes on Wednesday, staying with an aggressive Fords team as they launched 13 shots towards LVC's goal. However, with five seconds remaining in the game, it was a header from one of LVC's own players that beat goalie Sami Young, and Haverford snuck away with a 1-0 victory.
LVC drops to 4-3-1 while Haverford improves its record to 5-0-2.
Haverford brought offensive pressure for most of the match, but Young made three saves on shots that reached her and jumped into the play countless other times to intercept crosses and loose balls before Haverford could convert. Jordan Nendza, Julie Vonhauser and the rest of the LVC defense made stops throughout the game to keep it scoreless, but the last-second flurry was the one attempt that wasn't rebuffed.
Haverford earned a corner with 10 seconds left on the clock. After Anna Rayne launched the entry toward the net, Michele Buonora lobbed a soft kick over Young's head that hit the crossbar. It appeared luck was on LVC's side and the game would head to overtime, but in the final, jumbled push for the ball, the rebound of the first shot was headed into the goal by an LVC player.
Lebanon Valley is back on the field Sept. 26 against Eastern University at Herbert Field.
