BOX SCORE
DALLAS, Pa. - The Lebanon Valley College women's soccer team did not ease into the 2009 season, playing over 106 minutes of soccer on Tuesday night before falling in double overtime to Misericordia, 1-0.
Sam Helmstetter scored her first goal of the season to give the Cougars the win late in the second extra period. She collected a pass from Kim Suchoski and worked her way around LVC goalie Sami Young to net the winning score.
The result was a reversal of fortune for the Dutchmen from the 2008 match with Misericordia. In that game, held in Annville at LVC, the Dutchmen potted a golden goal of their own - also in the 106th minute of the game - for their first win of the season.
The Cougars controlled the first half of play, sending 12 shots towards the LVC goal to only two for the Dutchmen. Seven of those attempts reached keeper Sami Young, and if not for her adept ability to stop them all, the course of the game may have been drastically different.
In the second half, LVC played a more composed game, and placed more shots on goal. Both keepers continued to keep the ball out of the net and overtime was needed.
In the first OT, Misericordia keeper Morgan Myers was called upon to make two more saves while Young stopped the only shot the Cougars had on net. LVC had chances in the second OT, taking three shots, but only one found net and that was quickly smothered by Myers.
Her save allowed the Cougars to mount an attack of their own, one which was successful after the connection between Suchoski and Helmstetter.
Young made nine saves in her first collegiate start for LVC. Dana Thomsen and Julie Vonhauser each had two shots on goal for the Dutchmen.
Lebanon Valley is 0-1 on the season and is back in action on Sept. 5 against Drew at the Centenary Tournament.
