CHESTER, Pa. - The Lebanon Valley College softball team split a pair of games at Widener on Saturday, losing the opener 1-0 before bouncing back with a 1-0 win.
The Dutchmen (24-12, 9-3 CC) had already sewn up the conference's #2 seed, and will take on Widener in the first round, which will start at Messiah on Friday at 1 p.m.
GAME ONE
The opener turned into a duel between
Val Malizzia (11-4) and Kim Dougherty (10-7) as the two hurlers combined to allow just five hits.
With a scoreless game heading into the fifth, Dougherty helped herself by singling in the go-ahead run to score Erika Pacholski.
LVC then threatened in the bottom of the inning, almost tying the game when
Kerri Datres attempted to score from second on
Katie DeJulio's double. After rounding third, the freshman was thrown out on the relay from right, and LVC was shut down in the seventh as Widener won to clinch their playoff spot.
GAME TWO
It was a reversal of fortune for LVC in the nightcap, with
Laura Snyder (9-4) outworking Kelsey Shultz (10-6) with a four-hit shutout.
The Dutchmen broke the scoreless game open when Datres singled to lead off the sixth, then moved to third on a sac bunt by DeJulio and
Kristen Uhas' fly-out. That brought up
Allie Davies, who singled to left-center to score Datres before getting thrown out at second to end the inning.
That was all LVC needed as Snyder got out of the sixth, then struck out two batters in the seventh to seal the win.
NEXT UP: LVC will host the University of Scranton in a make-up game on Tuesday.
