ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley bounced back from a 5-2 opening-game loss to beat Wilkes, 6-2, in the second game of their non-conference doubleheader on Thursday.
LVC (23-11) fell victim to a pair of home runs by Wilkes (16-18) in the third inning of the opener, including Gina Stefanelli's grand slam. The Dutchmen used some timely hitting and capitalized on Wilkes' mistakes to manufacture six runs in the nightcap.
Val Malizzia (11-3) gave up just one earned run in the opener;
Laura Snyder (8-4) struck out nine to earn the win in game two.
GAME ONE
In the opener, LVC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when
Allie Davies drilled her first career triple down the right-field line, driving in
Kerri Datres and
Katie DeJulio.
However, things quickly came unraveled for the Dutchmen in the third. Alyssa Ciesla led off by bouncing a home run off the top of the right-field fence, and some defensive miscues proved to be costly. With a runner on, MeLisa Bracone reached in a dropped fly by
Chelsea Artz, putting runners on second and third. Kristy Ordile walked after a dropped foul ball to load the bases, and that set up Stefanelli, who crushed the first pitch she saw to deep left field for the grand slam.
LVC's best chance to score came with two on in the fourth after Artz reached on an error and Datres singled, but DeJulio popped up to end the inning.
Only one of Malizzia's five runs were earned, and she struck out five. Wilkes' ace Lindsay Behrenshausen (12-5) allowed four hits in the win.
GAME TWO
LVC again got off to a fast start in game two, and managed to hold onto the lead for the 6-2 win.
With two out in the first, Davies again got things started with an RBI double to right to bring in Kristen Palmerio. In the second, it was Datres who knocked in two runs with a double to the gap, plating
Marisa Krause and
Steph Hulme.
The Valley extended the lead in the third with
Katie Freeman's RBI single to go up 4-0.
Wilkes cut the lead in half with a two-run fifth, with Dalton's double down the line and Stefanelli's RBI groundout providing the punch.
LVC got two insurance runs in the sixth when Krause and
Janey Kozlowski each scored on wild pitches by Maureen Pelot (3-5).
