ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley rode 13 strikeouts by
Val Malizzia in game one and an offensive outburst in game two to sweep Elizabethtown, 5-2 and 9-1 (6 inn.), Saturday in Commonwealth Conference play.
Malizzia broke the LVC record for consecutive scoreless innings with 26 before the Blue Jays (3-17, 0-4 CC) scored two runs in the sixth to break up her no-hit bid.
In the nightcap, the Dutchmen (16-6, 6-0 CC) broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning after taking an early 4-0 lead.
With her win, Malizzia moved to 9-0 for the season;
Laura Snyder (4-3) struck out seven and allowed one run to earn the win in game two.
GAME ONE
LVC wasted no time in the opener as it jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After two infield errors put
Meghan Donoghue and
Katie DeJulio on base and a fielder's choice by
Kristen Uhas loaded the bases,
Allie Davies ripped a bases-clearing double to left-center to score all three runs.
The Dutchmen put two more across in the fourth thanks to Donoghue's triple to right-center to plate
Janey Kozlowski and
Marisa Krause.
Meanwhile, Malizzia was absolutely dominant through the middle of the game, striking out six in a row at one point before Elizabethtown's Marian Guzik broke up the no-hitter in the sixth with a single. After Lauren Hoover walked, Julie Sebastian singled in two runs to break Malizzia's scoreless streak, but it would be all the offense the Blue Jays would get as they would lose, 5-2.
Sebastian took the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) and striking out two.
GAME TWO
Elizabethtown nearly had a huge inning to start game two. With a runner on, Holly Martin thought she had a home run as she crushed a towering ball down the left-field line that easily cleared the fence, but was ruled foul. Thankfully for the Dutchmen, she would go on to strike out, and Snyder worked out of a jam with a runner on third to end the inning.
The LVC offense responded by putting three runs on the board in the second to take the lead. After
Caitlin Keller drew a lead-off walk, Davies bunted her around, and Donoghue and Palmerio drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for
Chelsea Kehr, who hammered a double to the fence in center to bring them all home.
Keller added an RBI double of her own in the third to make it 4-0, but E-town broke up the shutout with Sarah Church knocked in Guzik, who had led off with a triple.
LVC tacked on a four-run outburst in the fifth with an RBI single by Keller and Davies and
Kristen Palmerio's two-run double later in the inning.
Then, in the sixth, Keller finished out her three-RBI day by sending Kerri Datres home on a sacrifice fly to end the game at 9-1.
Elaine Parr took the loss for E-town, allowing eight earned and issuing six walks.
LVC will be home again on Tuesday, hosting Delaware Valley.
