READING, Pa. - Lebanon Valley began its defense of the Commonwealth Conference title on the right foot, sweeping Albright College in a doubleheader on Wednesday. Both games ended 6-3.

The Dutchmen (6-4, 2-0 CC) were led by sophomore Meghan Donoghue, who went a combined 7-for-8 with five runs, and junior Kristen Uhas, who went 4-for-7 with four RBI and a home run in the two-game set.

Sophomore Val Malizzia, who tied a career-high with 14 strikeouts, and freshman Kristen Palmerio picked up wins in the circle.

GAME ONE

LVC got off to a quick start in the opener thanks to Uhas' RBI single to plate Donoghue, and Donoghue knocked in another run in the second with a single to score Janey Kozlowski.

In the third, Uhas pulled a shot and wrapped a solo home run around the right-field foul pole to go up 3-0, and Donoghue doubled in Kozlowski again and Katie DeJulio banged out an RBI single to make it a 5-0 margin in the fourth.

Meanwhile, Malizzia was lights out, allowing just two baserunners before getting into trouble in the sixth. After a double and an error put two on for the Lions, Alex Keyes drilled a three-run blast to right to cut the lead to 6-3.

Malizzia took care of business, however, inducing a ground out to end the sixth and striking out the side in the seventh. The sophomore finished the day allowing just four hits, two earned runs, and struck out 14 with no walks.

Dana Parolari took the loss for the Lions, giving up 10 hits and four earned runs with three strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Dutchmen again put the game out of reach early, taking a 5-0 lead after three innings in the nightcap.

After Caitlin Keller doubled in Uhas for a run in the first, LVC broke the game open with a four-run third. Uhas' sacrifice fly scored Donoghue, and with DeJulio and Keller on, Allie Davies launched a home run to center to make it a 5-0 game.

LVC tacked on another run in the sixth, with Donoghue scoring her fifth run of the day after leading off with a triple and reaching on Uhas' single.

Albright rallied late, however, testing Palmerio as Keyes homered for the second time in the sixth and Kelli Johnson knocked in Alex Tragno in the seventh. The freshman hurler got out of trouble, however, to pick up the win with six strikeouts.

Mary Dwyer had the loss, walking seven and allowing nine hits.

LVC will host Lycoming Saturday in the 2009 home opener at 1 p.m.
