Women's Basketball Opens Season With 80-50 Win

Lebanon Valley College opened its 2009-10 women's basketball season in style, storming out to a 37-19 lead at halftime before cruising to an 80-50 win over Hood  College.

Suzie Noyes led LVC with 16 points. Eryn Schultz had 13 points and freshman Sarah Colton also added 13 in her first collegiate game.

Rookie Renee Fritz was the top rebounder for the Dutchmen, pulling down eight boards. Classmate Gia Russo grabbed seven rebounds as well.

Andrea Hoover was a big factor in facilitating the game at the point guard spot, with four assists and four steals for the Dutchmen.

The Dutchmen never trailed, and led by as much as 34 with 8:08 to play in the game. Layups from Noyes, Schultz and Caitlin Murphy gave LVC a 6-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game. A jumper from Cheslea Kehr opened the lead to 16-4.

In the second half, after Hood closed back within 20 at 49-26, LVC scored 14 points in a row to extend its lead to 63-29. Noyes had six points in that stretch.

The Dutchmen shot 50.9% from the field, the eighth best mark in school history. The advantage in the paint was a big factor for LVC, as they outscored Hood, 23-16 in the paint. Lebanon Valley was able to draw from its bench at a better clip than Hood, with a 37-5 advantage in bench points. The Dutchmen were only 2-for-7 from three-point range, but Hood had more trouble from beyond the arc, hitting only 5-of-25 three-pointers.

Allyson Lethbridge led Hood with 19 points while Jen Wilson went for eight points and 10 boards.

The Dutchmen are 1-0 and will play Misericordia Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.
