ANNVILLE, Pa. - Senior
Jenny DiMauro scored the overtime golden goal winner in the 106th minute as Lebanon Valley College broke a scoreless tie to defeat Misericordia University, 1-0, in women's soccer on Friday.
It was the second straight overtime venture for the Dutchmen (2-1), who were on the other end of a 1-0 scoreline against Greensboro College on Sunday. The Cougars (1-2) threatened early in overtime, hitting the post, but LVC countered for the win.
The game was moved up a day due to the threat of rain from Tropical Storm Hanna.
The winner came at 105:36 thanks to senior
Erin McGarvey, who got free on the left wing and went cross-field to a wide-open DiMauro. The senior had only the keeper to beat as she buried the finish for the win.
Both sides had plenty of scoring chances with a combined 19 shots. LVC struck early when
Lauren King broke free but shot right at the goalkeeper, and freshman
Courtney Catania ripped a shot off the post in the 21st minute. King nearly struck again at the tailend of the first half when she got behind the defense but again was beaten by the keeper.
After a back-and-forth second half failed to end in a result, the Dutchmen pressed to start overtime, and again it was King with the offense and she broke free but was beaten to the ball by goalkeeper Jen Gregorowicz.
Misericordia's best chance came a minute into the second overtime. Elizabeth Lipovsky drilled a shot from an angle, and freshman
Alyson Reitmeyer got her fingertips to it to deflect off the post and out of play.
The Cougars held an 11-8 shot advantage, while LVC led 4-3 in corners. Reitmeyer earned the win and the clean sheet, her second, with five saves; Gregorowicz took the loss while playing the second half and overtime in relief of Jemila Najjar-Keith.
LVC will visit Bryn Mawr on Sept. 11 at 4 p.m.
