Moravian Deals Football 23-16 Setback

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Moravian College scored a fourth-quarter go-ahead touchdown to deal Lebanon Valley College its first loss of the season, 23-16, at a picture-perfect Arnold Field Saturday.

The Dutchmen (2-1) took the lead early in the fourth quarter on Charlie Parker's eight-yard touchdown run, but the Greyhounds scored late, then killed the clock after stopping an LVC drive.

Sophomore Joe Brennan went over 100 yards receiving for the second straight game, catching six passes for 109 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown. Caleb Fick was solid, going 17-of-28 for 228 yards and a TD, but Moravian's defense pressured him all day, leading to four sacks.

Moravian relied on its three-pronged rushing attack, racking up 264 yards in all including Tyler McCambridge's 119 yards, Tyler deRouen's 74-yard effort, and 71 yards by Morgan deRouen.

LVC got a gift early on after backing Moravian up on the opening drive. The Greyhounds punted after going three-and-out, but the snap flew over punter Michael Voskian's head and out the back of the end zone for a safety.

The Dutchmen drove on the ensuing possession, but Parker's fumble ended a good chance inside the red zone and set up an 82-yard Moravian drive that ended with Tyler McCambridge going over the top from the one for a 7-2 lead.

An LVC fumble again stopped a solid chance in Moravian territory when Derek Protasiewicz hit Matt Donley after a catch, allowing Don Maxwell to pounce on the ball for the Greyhounds.

The teams traded possessions until midway through the second quarter when Fick bombed a pass to Brennan, who took off 65 yards for the touchdown to go up 9-7.

Moravian responded on their second drive of the third quarter when McCambridge broke loose and scampered 31 yards for his second touchdown.

LVC drove again, and Fick's shovel pass to Parker got them over midfield and out of a third-down jam, but a penalty and three straight incompletions forced a punt. After Moravian stalled at midfield, the Dutchmen went on an epic 14-play, 82-yard drive that ate 6:11 off the clock. Keyed by a fourth-down completion to Matt Donley deep in Greyhound territory, Parker got the call and found a hole for an eight-yard touchdown, and Brittany Ryan's extra point took the lead at 16-15.

The Greyhounds came right back with a touchdown drive of their own, kept alive by an LVC personal foul penalty at midfield after quarterback Marc Braxmeier came close to converting a fourth-and-one chance. Tyler deRouen ended the drive with an 18-yard touchdown, and Braxmeier's two-point conversion to Brian Dencker made it 23-16.

The Dutchmen went three-and-out and punted in hopes of getting the ball back with just over three minutes left, but Moravian ran the ball effectively to kill the clock and end the game.
