Lebanon Valley 19, Gettysburg 13
Junior Charlie Parker racked up 210 all-purpose yards and had two touchdowns as Lebanon Valley held off a Gettysburg comeback to win their season opener, 19-13, last weekend. The game was played in the driving rain and wind of Tropical Storm Hanna, and was delayed twice due to lightning. The Dutchmen ran out to a 19-0 lead before giving up two third-quarter touchdowns to the Bullets, who drove nearly the length of the field at the end of the fourth quarter but fell short in a comeback bid. Sophomore quarterback Caleb Fick completed 8-of-16 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns, including an 82-yard strike to Parker in the first half.

Gettysburg Odds and Ends
The game was delayed twice by lightning, for a total of an hour, first extending halftime and then again with 3:38 remaining in the game ...It was LVC's third straight win in a home opener ... It was the third straight time LVC has beaten Gettysburg at home, following a 13-12 win in 2006 and 2004's 7-3 victory ... Charlie Parker posted his 11th career 100-yard rushing performance ... Dane Eichelberger, making his first career start at free safety, had two interceptions and three tackles ... Despite the weather, both teams took care of the ball, each fumbling once, with Gettysburg losing theirs ... Freshman Colt Zarilla was outstanding at punter for LVC, putting four punts inside the 20, including two inside the five ... LVC and Gettysburg have alternated wins on their home fields every year since 2003 ... According to the National Weather Service at Ft. Indiantown Gap, the Lebanon Valley received just under two inches of rain during the course of the game.

With Honors, Part I
Sophomore safety Dane Eichelberger and freshman punter Colt Zarilla were named the MAC Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, last Sunday. In addition, junior running back Charlie Parker was named to the MAC Weekly Honor Roll. Eichelberger, making his first career start at free safety, came up big for LVC with two interceptions in the game. Eichelberger's first pick stopped a deep Gettysburg drive at the end of the first half, and his second came at the start of the third quarter to set up LVC's third touchdown. Zarilla, making his collegiate debut at punter, was outstanding in the driving rain and wind of Tropical Storm Hanna, dropping four of his five punts inside the 20 and two inside the five-yard line. His five punts averaged 30.2 yards, with several going into a stiff, swirling wind.

With Honors,Part II
LVC had seven student-athletes named to the 2007 All-MAC teams, including first-teamers Charlie Parker, Adam Brossman '08, Brandon Wagner'08, and Russ DeStefano '08. Ryan Brennan'08, Sean Tetreault, and Brian Cottone all earned second-team slots.

Parker Nears 2,000
After his 128 yards rushing last week against Gettysburg, tailback Charlie Parker could become LVC's fourth 2,000-yard career rusher today, needing 67 yards to reach the milestone. The junior is fourth on the LVC all-time list. Parker had an outstanding 2007 season, breaking long-standing program records for yards in a season (1,105) and attempts (241) while becoming the MAC's only 1,000-yard rusher last year. In the season finale against Lycoming, Parker became the first Dutchman in 32 years to run for four touchdowns in a game, matching the feat achieved by Rick Coleman (1975 vs. Swarthmore) and Vern Magnuson (1960 vs. Widener).

Drive Stopping
If you consider the concept of a “drive stop” - that is, the play the defense makes to force the offense into either punting or turning the ball over on downs, by fumble, or by interception - the LVC defense came up big against Gettysburg. In the eight drive stops that LVC had, only one was stopped by a  tackle (Jeff Ochoa's stop on the Bullets' third drive). The Dutchmen 'D' came roaring out to stop the first two drives with third-down sacks by Chadd Comp and Alex Gilchrist, and Dane Eichelberger stopped two around halftime on interceptions. Tim Ridewood recovered a fumble, and Bill Dixon and Andrew Shambach stopped the last two drives (as Gettysburg was mounting a comeback attempt) with pass break-ups.

New Faces Step Up
With several injuries at key positions last week, a number of new faces were called on to step up. Defensively, freshman Tom Rasich racked up six tackles for the injured Chadd Comp, while freshman Nick Bowne made two tackles in significant time at defensive end. On special teams, Colt Zarilla, who was the preseason starter at punter, shined with his performance, earning MAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Chris Hall, who does double duty with the LVC men's soccer team, booted kick-offs.

Series Notes

Today's game is the 38th meeting all-time between LVC and Ursinus ... This year marks the 110th anniversary of the LVC-Ursinus series, which began on Oct. 4, 1898 (Ursinus won, 6-0) ... The two teams are renewing a rivalry that has not been played since 2000 ... LVC leads the series 20-17 ... Ursinus has won seven straight going back to 1982 ... LVC's last win vs. Ursinus came in 1981, a 17-0 shutout under Head Coach Lou Sorrentino ...  Head Coach Jim Monos has never faced Ursinus ... LVC is 1-2-1 all-time on Sept. 13 ... The two sides are no doubt fighting for the honor of their 1903 teams, who played to a disputed finish. According to the LVC yearbook from that year: “LVC led 5-0 when there was less than a minute of the game yet to be played. Ursinus left the field on account of a disputed decision and declared that LV had forfeited. The score was published as 6-0 in favor of Ursinus, thus robbing LV of credit for her hard-earned victory.” Officially, LVC counts this game as a 5-0 win.

Next Week
The Dutchmen return home for their final non-conference game, hosting Moravian College on Sept. 20 at 1 p.m.
