GRANTHAM, Pa. - No. 2 Messiah College combined a potent offense with a stifling defense to shutout Lebanon Valley College, 4-0, in the semifinals of the Commonwealth Conference tournament Tuesday night.
The Dutchmen end the season at 10-8-1, their first winning season since 2004. Messiah (18-0) will move on to host the championship game on Saturday against Elizabethtown College, a 3-1 winner over Widener on Tuesday.
LVC's defense frustrated Messiah for the first 20 minutes of the game, but the Falcons punched through when Stef Rowe finished Emily Cope's centering pass.
Erin Hench drilled shot from the 18 just before the half to send Messiah into the break up 2-0.
Rowe opened the second half with a bang, one-timing a shot from eight yards out to put Messiah up 3-0. Amy Horst made it 4-0 near the end of the game when she shot a ball that glanced off Erika Ely's hand and deflected in.
Messiah held the Dutchmen to a single shot and held a 12-1 advantage overall. Messiah took nine corners to LVC's none. Ely made two saves.
