ANNVILLE, Pa. - Senior Adam Brossman caught the go-ahead touchdown with 7:25 left in the fourth quarter as Lebanon Valley College snapped a four-game losing skid by beating King's College, 13-9, at Arnold Field Saturday.
The Dutchmen (2-5, 1-3 MAC) won for the first time this season in MAC play, while the Monarchs (0-7, 0-4 MAC) continued their misery with their seventh straight loss.
Sophomore Charlie Parker had a prodigious day on the ground, rushing 37 times for 152 yards with a touchdown. Brossman caught three passes for 58 yards, including his 31-yard touchdown haul in the fourth quarter.
The LVC defense played well, allowing the King's offense just three points. The Monarchs' lone touchdown came when Tore Alaimo blocked an LVC punt at the goal line and fell on it for a score, ruining an otherwise sparkling punting afternoon by Brossman, who had six punts and averaged 43.8 yards with two longer than 50 yards.
The Dutchmen scored first, eating up 7:03 on an epic first-quarter drive capped by Parker's over-the-top touchdown with 2:40 left in the quarter. The drive appeared to have stalled and sophomore Andrew Brandt attempted (and missed) a 27-yard field goal, but King's got hit with a toughing the kicker penalty and Parker scored two plays later. Brandt's extra point was blocked, however, and LVC took a 6-0 lead.
The Monarchs knotted the game on Alaimo's blocked punt recovery with 40 seconds left in the first half. Tim Lust pulled the PAT attempt wide left, sending the teams into the half tied at six.
King's opened the second half with their best drive of the game at 12 plays and 41 yards, but had to settle for Andrew DeRito's 25-yard field goal with 7:59 remaining in the third quarter.
LVC came back and drove into King's territory, but freshman Caleb Fick came under pressure and threw an interception right into the hands of Edwyn Edwards, setting King's up at their own 45. The Monarchs moved into Lebanon Valley territory, but stalled, and eventually were held by the defense as Blaine Fox's pass to Rick Ritter fell incomplete on fourth-and-7.
The two teams traded possession before LVC took the ball at their own 30. Sophomore Patrick Weiss entered the game at quarterback and made an immediate impact, completing a 10-yard screen to Parker and then an 18-yard strike over the middle to Brossman. With first-and-10 at the King's 31, Weiss went deep down the near side and hit Brossman at the goal line for the go-ahead touchdown.
King's took their final possession with 1:30 left at their own 17, and Fox completed a pass to Ritter up to the Monarch 39. Fox went long on first down, but Bill Dixon came down with the pick to end the game.
