WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College softball team split a doubleheader with cross-conference nemesis Lycoming College this afternoon. LVC improved to 7-4 overall, while Lycoming stands at 6-5.
In game one, the Warriors had their way at the plate, as they registered seven hits en route to a 7-0 shutout victory.
Game two saw a pitching duel between freshman
Jess Cooney (Rockledge, Pa./Abington) and Lycoming's Laurie Rooney.
Heading into the seventh inning, it appeared that Rooney was headed toward a no-hitter and the Warriors their second consecutive shutout of LVC, but the Valley persevered.
Jamie Bailey (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) ignited the rally with a one-out single.
Sam Rill (Lebanon, Pa./Annville-Cleona) then reached base via a throwing error. Senior slugger
Krissy Wardrop (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown) hit into a fielder's choice to advance the runners into scoring position. With two outs and runners at second and third, sophomore
Kendra McQuillis (New London, Pa./Avon Grove) came through clutch with an RBI single to score Bailey. A throwing error advanced her to second base. Freshman
Gina Battistelli (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) followed suit with a single into the outfield to score both runners and give the Valley a 3-1 come-from-behind victory.
Cooney earned her fourth win of the season on seven strong innings pitched.
LVC will travel to DeSales University for a doubleheader on Thursday, March 21, at 2:30 p.m.
