Mark Costello

Mark Costello enters his 17th year as an assistant coach in 2020 and the squad's offensive coordinator. A 2004 graduate of Susquehanna University, Costello spent four seasons as the defensive backfield coach before taking over as special teams coordinator and running backs coach in 2009. He shifted to working with wide receivers in 2014 and guided the team’s quarterbacks in 2017.

Costello’s running backs broke plenty of records, starting with Charlie Parker ’10, who became LVC’s all-time leading rusher, and continuing with Ben Guiles ’12, who surpassed his former teammate on the career rushing and touchdowns lists in 2011. Evan Fink ’14 scored 14 touchdowns in 2012, the most ever by a fullback, and was a two-time All-MAC pick. In 2009 and 2010, Costello put together the MAC’s top run game, which included both Parker and Guiles going for 900-plus yards in 2009 and Guiles rushing for more than 1,300 in 2010 and 1,200 in 2011. During a five-year stretch, LVC backs  earned a combined seven All-MAC honors between them, capped by Guiles’ 2011 MAC Player of the Year award.

Costello’s efforts with the team’s wide receivers beared immediate fruit as Tyler George ’15 earned Second-Team All-MAC honors and an invitation to the Dream Bowl Senior All-Star Game in 2014.

A number of LVC’s special teams players have also been honored since Costello took over the unit, including 2015 D3football.com Second-Team All-Region punter Spencer Moser. Additionally, kicker Marcus Brown was twice named the MAC’s Special Teams Player of the Week in 2015, while Tyler Hodges earned the same accolade, as well as a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week, last fall. Costello worked with First-Team All-MAC and All-ECAC punter Colt Zarilla ’12, and LVC ranked among the leaders in return yardage in 2009 and 2010. Sean Donovan ’10 was named First-Team All-MAC as a return specialist after the 2009 season. Sean Fakete earned All-MAC honors three times, breaking virtually every LVC kicking record in the process.

At Susquehanna, he was a two-year letterwinner for the River Hawks at linebacker. He and his wife, Kristi, reside in Lebanon with their daughter, Camryn, and sons, Thomas and Paul.
