Baseball Battles Tough Against Misericordia in Series Opener

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Kenny Palmieri recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season for the Lebanon Valley College baseball team, as the program battled valiantly while dropping a 6-1 decision to Misericordia University on Friday, April 17, at McGill Field.

Starting pitcher Owen Berry began the game with a scoreless top of the first inning for the Dutchmen (13-20, 7-9 MAC Freedom), getting out of the frame with a lineout to center fielder Spencer Butz to strand a runner at first base. Lebanon Valley then opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Cougars (24-10, 13-3 MAC Freedom). Berry led off with a single to center field and advanced to third after a passed ball and a groundout. Lucien Burger then came through with an unassisted RBI groundout to first base, knocking in Berry.

Misericordia countered with an RBI triple in the top of the second, tying the contest at 1-1. The Flying Dutchmen got another runner into scoring position in the bottom of the second, as Palmieri hit a one-out single to right field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Berry then pitched a 1-2-3 top of the third inning for LVC, registering flyouts to Butz in center and left-center field before a popout to shortstop John Teehan. In the bottom of the third, Lebanon Valley picked up another base hit with a single to right-center field by Dylan Mennillo. Berry also blanked the Cougars in the top of the fourth, notching the third out with a groundout to Mennillo at second base to leave runners on first and second.

Berry continued his strong start for Lebanon Valley in the top of the fifth inning, retiring the side in order with a groundout to third baseman Daniel Palmieri, a groundout to Teehan at shortstop, and another groundout to Daniel Palmieri. The Dutchmen also continued to battle at the plate in the bottom of the fifth, as Kenny Palmieri tallied another hit with a leadoff single through the left side. Teehan then reached on a fielder's choice to first base before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher. In the top of the sixth, Berry tossed a shutout frame for LVC and stranded a runner at third base with a flyout to left fielder Lucien Burger for the third out.

Misericordia scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, taking a 4-1 advantage with an RBI fielder's choice on a bunt and two RBI singles. The Flying Dutchmen kept competing in the batter's box in the bottom half of the seventh, as Daniel Palmieri lined a one-out double down the right-field line and later advanced to third base on a flyout. Nate Savage followed this by pitching a scoreless top of the eighth for LVC, getting out of the inning with a fielder's choice. The Cougars later hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning, going up 6-1. This would stand as the final score.
