Dutchmen Baseball Earns Victory Over Delaware Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. ­­– The Lebanon Valley College baseball team scored 13 runs behind 11 hits and 10 walks, propelling the program to a 13-2 run-rule victory over Delaware Valley University in seven innings during the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 11, at McGill Field. Earlier in the day, LVC dropped a hard-fought 9-8 contest in the first matchup.

Game One 
The Aggies (14-16, 5-9 MAC Freedom) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly. Starting pitcher Landon Sexton then delivered a scoreless top of the second for the Dutchmen (11-18, 6-8 MAC Freedom), getting out of the frame with a strikeout swinging to strand runners on first and second base. Lebanon Valley got on the board in the bottom of the second, taking a 2-1 advantage. Kenny Palmieri led off with a walk before stealing second and third base. Tyler Satterfield followed this with an RBI double to right field, knocking in Palmieri. Owen Berry also hit an RBI single to right field, plating Satterfield. 

Delaware Valley scored four runs in the top of the third inning, taking a 5-2 lead in a frame that included an error, an RBI single, and a steal of home. The Aggies also added three tallies in the top of the fourth, going up 8-2 on an RBI single, an RBI double, and an RBI triple. The Flying Dutchmen responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, narrowing the score to 8-3 when Berry launched a solo home run over the left-field wall. 

Jack Johnson pitched a 1-2-3 frame for Lebanon Valley in the top of the fifth inning, registering two groundouts to third baseman Daniel Palmieri and a groundout to second baseman John Teehan up the middle. Delaware Valley went up 9-3 in the top of the sixth, scoring a run when LVC turned a double play. 

Johnson also posted a zero for the Dutchmen in the top of the seventh inning, ending the frame with a groundout to Teehan at second base. Lebanon Valley's lineup continued to battle until the final out, crossing the plate five times in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 9-8 contest. The program loaded the bases when Daniel Palmieri reached on a fielder's choice, Kody Phillips singled up the middle, and Spencer Butz walked. Daniel Palmieri then scored on a wild pitch, and Lucien Burger hit an RBI single to center field to drive in Phillips. Kenny Palmieri followed this with an RBI single up the middle, bringing in Butz. Joey Santora also came through with a two-run single to left-center field, knocking in Burger and Kenny Palmieri. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the game.

Inside the Box Score
  • Berry recorded two hits, including his first home run of the season, while tying a game-high two RBIs and scoring a run. 
  • Daniel Palmieri registered a game-high and season-high three hits while scoring a run. 
  • Kenny Palmieri logged two hits, a walk, an RBI, two runs scored, and a game-high two stolen bases. The senior matched a career-high in stolen bases as well. 
  • Santora picked up a base hit and tied a career-high two RBIs. 
  • Burger recorded two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. 
  • Satterfield hit a double, knocked in a run, and scored a run. 
  • Butz drew a game-high three walks, tying a career-high. The senior scored a run as well. 
  • Phillips picked up a base hit and crossed the plate once.
  • Lebanon Valley outhit Delaware Valley 12-10. 
  • Sexton struck out a game-high four batters.
  • Jaden Click and Johnson each struck out a batter. 
Game Two 
Delaware Valley (14-17, 5-10 MAC Freedom) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a play where Santora threw out a runner attempting to steal second while a runner at third scored on the throw. Starting pitcher Connor Smith then logged a scoreless top of the second for Lebanon Valley (12-18, 7-8 MAC Freedom), striking out two batters in the process. 

Smith blanked the opposition in the top of the third inning as well, fielding a groundout himself for the third out to strand a runner at second base. The Dutchmen got on the board in the bottom of the third, taking a 2-1 lead. The club loaded the bases on singles by Santora and Berry, and a walk by Daniel Palmieri. Phillips then delivered a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Santora. Butz followed this with an RBI single to left field, driving in Berry. Smith later posted another zero for LVC in the top of the fourth, getting out of the inning with a strikeout swinging and a flyout to right fielder Kenny Palmieri to leave a runner at third base. 

In the bottom of the fourth, the Flying Dutchmen scored a pair of runs to go up 4-1. Teehan began the frame with a single through the left side, and Santora drew a walk, before the runners executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Satterfield then hit a ball to center field that was dropped, allowing Teehan to cross the plate on the error. Later in the inning, Santora scored on a wild pitch. 

Smith continued his strong start for Lebanon Valley in the top of the fifth inning, blanking the Aggies and concluding the frame with a double play. The Dutchmen followed this with six more runs in the bottom half of the fifth, extending their lead to 10-1. The team quickly had runners on second and third base, as Burger walked and Kenny Palmieri hit a double down the left-field line. Teehan then hit an RBI single to center field, knocking in Burger. Santora also sent an RBI single through the left side, bringing home Kenny Palmieri. Berry delivered an RBI double to left field as well, scoring Santora. Daniel Palmieri was up next and came through with an RBI sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, plating Satterfield. Phillips then hit an RBI single to center, bringing in Berry. Burger later capped off the big inning with an RBI single down the left-field line, driving in Phillips. 

Delaware Valley crossed the plate in the top of the sixth, making it a 10-2 contest on an RBI single. Lebanon Valley's lineup then tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 13-2 advantage. Daniel Palmieri stepped into the batter's box with the bases loaded and delivered another RBI sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher, knocking in Teehan. Butz was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Satterfield. Burger followed this by walking with the bases full, which brought home Berry. In the top of the seventh inning, Berry moved from shortstop to the mound for the Dutchmen. The senior secured LVC's win by retiring the side in order, registering a flyout to right fielder Kenny Palmieri and two strikeouts. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Berry tied a game-high two hits with a double, matched a season-high two walks, drove in a run, and tied a game-high three runs scored. The senior also extended his hitting streak to seven games. On the mound, Berry tied a season-high two strikeouts in a perfect inning of relief. 
  • Burger reached base five times by tying a game-high two hits and drawing a game-high and season-high three walks. The sophomore also matched a game-high two RBIs and scored a run. 
  • Phillips tallied a base hit, a hit-by-pitch, and a run scored, while tying a game-high two RBIs. 
  • Butz logged a hit and a hit-by-pitch while tying a game-high two RBIs. 
  • Santora matched a game-high and career-high two hits, walked once, knocked in a run, and tied a game-high three runs scored. The junior set a career-high in runs scored, while also stealing a base. Additionally, the catcher threw out two runners attempting to steal bases. 
  • Teehan tied a game-high and season-high two hits, walked once, drove in a run, and matched a season-high two runs scored. The first-year also stole a game-high and season-high three bases. 
  • Daniel Palmieri tied a game-high and season-high two RBIs and drew a walk. 
  • Satterfield tied a season-high two walks, stole a base, and matched a season-high two runs scored. 
  • Kenny Palmieri hit a double and crossed the plate once.
  • The Dutchmen outhit the Aggies 11-8.
  • Smith earned his first career win, striking out a game-high and season-high eight batters in six innings on the mound.
