ARLINGTON, Va. – The Lebanon Valley women's lacrosse team used a dominating second-half performance to pull away from host Marymount University for a 15-8 victory on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Virginia.
The Flying Dutchmen (3-3) outscored the Saints (3-2) 9-3 in the second half and had a decisive 25-6 shot advantage during the final 30 minutes.
Kamille Bagapuro won the opening draw of the game, and
Elizabeth Morgan hit the post on the first shot. The Saints scored the first goal of the game nearly four minutes in to take the early lead. Bagapuro won her second draw control, and a little over 30 seconds later, Morgan tied the score with an unassisted goal. Marymount took advantage of the Dutchmen playing a woman down after a pair of green cards within 39 seconds of each other by scoring a goal with 7:11 on the clock to retake the lead.
LVC answered with a pair of goals 30 seconds apart. Morgan evened the score with her second goal of the game, and then, after
Chloe Moser won the draw control, Morgan found
Kyla Hebert open for the go-ahead goal. The Dutchmen were victims of another green card as the Saints capitalized with their second woman-up goal of the game to tie the score at three with 3:40 remaining. Morgan had a shot saved after Hebert won the following draw. The Dutchmen were given two more cards over the final 2:30 of the quarter but were able to successfully kill off the penalties after ending the quarter with the ball and the score tied at three.
Nina Humpf hit the post to begin the second quarter of action. Morgan picked up the ground ball, and Bagapuro then worked her way to the goal for the go-ahead goal with 14:33 left in the half. LVC earned a free position shot after Bagapuro won the next draw. Morgan had her shot saved, and then a shot by Bagapuro was saved. The Saints gained possession of the ball and were able to tie the score up with a free-position goal two minutes later. The Dutchmen didn't wait long to retake the lead as Morgan hit the post;
Molly Whisler picked up the ground ball and put the rebound home for her first goal of the game to make it 5-4.
Morgan and Bagapuro had shots saved before
Katie DeWitt had a free position shot saved. Marymount was able to tie the score with 5:37 remaining in the half on a woman-down goal. The Dutchmen responded right back as Morgan completed her hat trick with her third goal of the game. The Dutchmen kept the pressure on as Hebert had a shot saved. The Saints put pressure on the Dutchmen in the closing minute of the half as they put a shot wide, hit the post, and then
Gigi Ditsky made a big save right before time expired.
The first two minutes of the second half were a battle as Bagapuro had a shot saved and then forced a turnover on the clear attempt. LVC earned a free position shot, and Hebert put it away for her second goal of the game to increase the lead to two. Bagapuro won the next draw and scored about 30 seconds later off a feed from Hebert to make it 8-5. The Dutchmen continued their fury as Hebert had a shot blocked, Morgan missed high, and then Whisler hit the post. Whisler scored a couple of minutes later off an assist from Morgan to put the Dutchmen up by four with nine minutes left in the quarter.
LVC continued to maintain possession, forcing a pair of failed clears by the Saints before Bagapuro found the back of the cage for her third goal of the game with 5:20 left. Moser won the following draw with DeWitt, Morgan, and Whisler having shots saved before a foul was called, and LVC earned a free position attempt. Morgan took the free position shot and scored to push the advantage to 11-5. The Dutchmen kept the foot on the gas as Morgan had a shot saved on a free position attempt two minutes later. The Saint cleared the ball and scored in the final minute of the quarter to cut the deficit to 11-6 with 15 minutes left.
The teams went up-and-down the field to begin the fourth quarter as
Grace Marchese forced a turnover and
Annelise Vetter picked up the ground ball. The Saints got the ball back and missed wide, and then a shot was blocked with 12 minutes to play. Ditsky stepped in front of a pass, and following a good clear,
Hannah Schneider scored to double LVC's lead at 12-6. Marymount countered about 30 seconds later with a woman-up goal.
The Dutchmen controlled possession over the next five minutes, with Whisler, Morgan, and DeWitt having shots saved. Whisler scored a woman-down goal off a feed from DeWitt and then added another goal a little over a minute later off an assist from
Bethany Cohee to put the Dutchmen up 14-7 with three minutes to play in the game. Schneider scored her second goal of the game in the final minute off a pass from Hebert before Marymount scored with 30 seconds left to set the final.
Inside the Box
- LVC defeated the defending Atlantic East Conference Champions in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
- Morgan led the team in scoring with six points on a season-high four goals and two assists. The junior took a game-high 16 shots and put 11 on goal.
- Whisler scored a season-high four goals on seven shots. The senior was responsible for the game-winning goal, her second this year and fifth of her career.
- Hebert had four points on two goals and two assists. The senior also won three draw controls.
- Bagapuro recorded the first hat trick of her career with three goals on seven shots. The midfielder also had five draw controls, four ground balls, and one caused turnover.
- Schneider scored two goals on two shots for her second multi-goal game of the season. She has scored five goals on six total shots this year.
- Chloe Moser won five draw controls, caused one turnover, and picked up two ground balls. The sophomore has 155 career draw controls.
- Cohee recorded an assist for the second consecutive game while DeWitt recorded her first assist of the season.
- Vetter and Marchese led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers each. Vetter also had two ground balls while Marchese had one.
- LVC had a 43-20 shot advantage in the game and won 15 of 25 draw controls. The Dutchmen were 16-20 on clear attempts and held a 27-17 ground ball advantage.

Lebanon Valley will make the short trip to Elizabethtown College next Saturday, March 14, to face the Blue Jays. The opening draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Wolf Field in Elizabethtown.
