MADISON, N.J. – Will Plappert hit a go-ahead RBI single for the Lebanon Valley College baseball team in the top of the eighth inning, propelling the program to a big 3-2 victory over FDU-Florham on Friday, March 27, at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark.
Devin Kreger also drove in two runs, while
Connor Simms and
Connor Smith posted strong relief appearances.
The Dutchmen (7-11, 4-3 MAC Freedom) quickly opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead over the Devils (10-10, 1-6 MAC Freedom).
Spencer Butz got things started with a one-out single to right field before moving into scoring position by stealing second base. Kreger then lined a two-out RBI single to left-center field, knocking in Butz. In the bottom of the first, starting pitcher
MJ Vottero began the game by posting a zero for Lebanon Valley. The first-year retired the side in order with a foul out where right fielder
Kenny Palmieri made a sliding catch, a flyout to Palmieri, and an unassisted groundout to first baseman
Parker Tarnoci.
FDU-Florham got on the board in the bottom half of the second, taking a 2-1 advantage a bunt RBI single and a walk with the bases loaded. The Flying Dutchmen answered right back with a run in the top of the third inning, tying the game at 2-2. The program began the rally by loading the bases with a single up the middle by
Owen Berry, a walk for Butz, and a single to left field by
Kody Phillips. Kreger then delivered a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Berry. In the bottom of the third, Simms entered the game to pitch for LVC when the Devils had runners on first and second base with two outs. The first-year pitcher notched the final out of a scoreless frame by fielding a groundout himself.
Simms also registered a shutout inning for Lebanon Valley in the bottom of the fourth, logging the final out with a fielder's choice. The Dutchmen continued to battle at the plate in the top of the fifth as well, as Phillips hit a two-out single to left-center field. Simms then blanked FDU-Florham again in the bottom of the fifth, getting out of the inning with a lineout to left fielder
Lucien Burger to strand a runner at first base. Simms continued his strong relief appearance for Lebanon Valley in the bottom of the sixth, completing a scoreless frame with a flyout to Butz in center field to leave a runner at second base.
The Flying Dutchmen generated more traffic on the basepaths in the top of the seventh inning, as
Dylan Mennillo hit a single to right-center field before Berry singled to right field with one out. The runners also advanced to second and third base on a groundout. In the bottom half of the seventh, Simms pitched a 1-2-3 inning for LVC with a groundout to Berry at shortstop, a lineout to Tarnoci at first base, and a flyout to Butz in center field.
Lebanon Valley crossed the plate again in the top of the eighth inning, taking a 3-2 lead. Kreger started the frame with double to center field and pinch runner
Luca Santoro advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Burger. Plappert then came through a clutch RBI single up the middle, driving in Santoro. In the bottom of the eighth, Smith came out of the bullpen to pitch for the Dutchmen and limited the opposition. The club registered the final out of the frame with a flyout to Butz in center field to strand a runner at third base. Smith then closed out LVC's victory with a zero in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Flying Dutchmen recorded a big double play for the first two outs before a groundout to third baseman
Daniel Palmieri left a runner on third and secured the win.
